One of the softer shooting .45 pistols I ever shot was n H&K USP. Not cheap, but SWEET. I may just have to get myself one.

Here' s my updated list which is split into two parts based on recommendations.

    S&W M&P 45
    FNH FNX 45
USP 45 and USP 45C and HK 45/45C
    Glock 21 and 21SF
    Glock 30

    Glock 36
    Ruger SR1911
    Ruger SR45
    Ruger P90
    STI Trojan
    ATI FX Thunderbolt Enhanced
    Taurus PT845
    Springfield 1911
    Sig 227
    Sig 220 Elite
    CZ 97

Some of those are out of my price range but I'd still try them. I'm guessing it is going to be hard to find all these to rent. Any recommendations on ranges that have big selections of 45s for rental? I usually default to On Target and Continental Firearms since they're close to me but I'm willing to do about an hour drive.

Not that it matters, but if you ever plan on using a weapon light, look for a pistol with a built in Picatinny rail or a universal rail like the Glocks.. IIRC the USP series from HK uses a proprietary rail system.

The HK45 and HK45C have built in Picatinny rails.

GG&G makes a nice Pic rail adapter for the USP.

They sell lights with the correct rail for the USP's.

Streamlight 69221 TLR-3 Weapon Mounted Tactical Light with USP Compact Clamp for example.

I'm looking forward to shooting my Glock 41 next week. I'll post my impressions about it accordingly.

Grip and stance plays a role. I've found the isosceles stance to transmit a lot of the recoil to your shoulders. If I keey arms slightly flexed, it absorbs recoil much better and allows for faster return to target.

I only have two .45 cal pistols, a Sig Sauer P220 Elite Carry in SS (top) and a Remington R1 Enhanced (bottom). Recoil on both of them is very manageable, particularly the Sig. All that metal in the frame and slide add up to a lot of recoil-damping mass. When I took my daughter to the range for the first time, she actually preferred shooting the .45 Sig over my 9mm Glock. I think you are wise to shoot as many pistols as you can before investing in a purchase. I wasn't wise like that, but I managed to luck out anyway and ended up with two pistols that like me as well as I like them.

While the 1911 has one of the nicest triggers out there, I prefer the double action Glock.

I'd like to see that "double action" Glock.

The Hk45 is a really nice gun; the USP 45 is great too if you have large hands.

I feel one of the best pointing 45s out there is the SIG220.

The striker in a Glock is only half cocked when ready to fire. Pulling the trigger finishes cocking the striker and releasing it. Strictly speaking, it could be deemed a DA pistol by some people.

    I call it a 1.5 action. :)

Not single action, and not really double action, some where in between.

I have four .45 acp handguns, Sig 220 elite, AS Operator and 2 HK45s. The HK is the softest shooting among my four .45 pistols. One of my HK45 is for sale if anybody is looking. It has about 500 rounds in it. Selling for $700 plus shipping.

Actually I think I read that somewhere a few years back; the ATF categorizes Glocks as double action...

...I retract my snide comment... ;)

I shoot an FNP 45, and I find it to be very easy to shoot, to me, the recoil is more of a push than the snap you get with 9mm/.40.

    I love mine

besides..If you can't conceal a Howitzer, carry the next best thing.
