I was cleaning out/reorganizing my safe last night and came across a couple guns that I have not shot in a while: a P226 and a P229, both W. German .40 S&W guns. What got me thinking was this: I knew that the .40 cartridge was introduced in 1990, and that Germany was reunited in 1990. So this must be rare with such a small window for production. Right? Then I used some google-fu and learned that the .40 226 and 229’s were not made until years after reunification. So WTF?

These were both bought as factory reconditioned guns, so it could be possible that the slides were swapped in the reconditioning process. Any thoughts?

I have seen a few SIG CPO FrankenGuns. Latest ones I saw were a couple 220s (DAK and DA/SA) that had W. German slides that had been reparkerized on new US 220R (railed) frames.

Reconditioned = safe and functional, not historically correct. Think "military re-arsenal" condition for milsurp guns. Great shooters, not so collectible.
