Anyone know what type of .30-06 this is? Was in my grandfathers collection so I don't know how old they could be. Think it's probably some sort of match ammo but couldn't find any real information on it. End of Cartridge says REM .30-06 UMC SPRG. So what kind is it and is it safe to shoot given it's at least 25-30 years old?

Safe to shoot but NOT in a M1, that was Remingtons answer to Winchester "Silvertip" hunting ammo circa 70's.

Remington Bronze Point. Old. Probably between 70-100 years old.

Fire away, or $$$ave, as I don't think you'll find them anywhere.

Bronze Point... that's it. I came across a box of them (just the bullet) and reloaded them, work great. I don't think they were that old, could be wrong. What he has is probably a reload.... maybe not but I wouldn't run it through a Garand.

Looks like they STILL make them! Maybe that why the ones I reloaded looked so good. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1601240379?pid=240379

Developed in 1920, bulk production in 1922, and IIRC ended production around 1950. I'd have to phone a friend for more info, but I think my numbers are pretty close. I'll have to check my father's stash to see if he has any in boxes.

But yet the bullets alone are still for sale at Midway. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The ones I had were in a plastic modern box.

All true, except that the bullets are pretty different. Bronze point is a 'peg point', similar to today's 'Ballistic Tip', while the Winchester Silvertip was just a soft point covered in heavy aluminum foil. Peel it off with a pair of pliers...
