I've used em in a cheapo AR. Theyre loaded in PMAGs for HD. I havent done serious ballistic testing with them but redneck testing with water jugs compared to M193 and M855 showed favorable results.

Soft points in an AR-15 are usually not recommended, due to bullet tip deformation during cycling and the lead chips/smears that will eventually foul the rifle. They'll usually function for a while, but the hazard will eventually surface and the gun will either fail to feed or, if a chip gets into the fire control area, fail to fire.

Soft points are fine in a manually operated rifle, such as a bolt gun.

I use either hollow points or Nosler Ballistic Tips in the AR-15s if I want an expanding bullet. The match HPs may not always expand, but there are a lot of HPs designed as varmint bullets that offer explosive expansion at close ranges.

    Sgt Preston here...

I get my best groups with my Mini 14 Target using 50 Grain Balistic tipped rounds...

    I've been using American Eagle AR223 Varmint (AE223GTV) (3240 fps) = $12 / 20 from Dick's...

They are small black plastic cone shaped tips...

My groups got considerably smaller just by changing to this ammo...

I adjust my Harmonic Balancer flush with the muzzle of the rifle...

And my groups are under 2" at 100 yards...

Thank you sir. How do you feel about the V-Max loads for putting down bad guys? Hornady TAP is so damn expensive.

Home defense rounds you should buy the best. Do you really need 1000 rounds of home defense? I think enough for 2 mags is sufficient. If you need more for defense it would be better to go into fmj anyway.

OP, are you asking for hunting purposes?

I would like to try to load some .223 hunting rounds. I think techincally Hornady GMX are the only rounds rated for medium game. What about the Barnes? They should be as well?

Something in the upper 70's in an AMAX should work also?
