With everyone getting their CCW, it's time to take it to the next level with some more training. It's hard to keep track of the various instructors out there and what they teach.

Post your recommendations for training courses (not CCW wear and carry stuff) for 2023 within a reasonable distance (no more than 2 hrs drive) from Central MD. Courses can can be pistol, rifle, tactics, medical, etc. The courses should have 2023 training dates.

I'd keep an eye on FPF Training (VA) (https://www.fpftraining.com/), Green Ops (VA) (https://www.green-ops.com/), Justified Defensive Concepts (VA) (https://www.justifieddefensiveconcepts.com/).

Pay particular attention, on the FPF web page, to the page labeled Guest Instructors. I'm already signed up to do "Tactical Scenarios" with Karl Rehn along with "Who Wins, Who Loses, and Why" and "Cognitive Pistol" with John Hearne. I've done the classes by Greg Ellifritz and Wayne Dobbs that are listed there, along with Karl Rehn's "Advanced Pistol". All highly recommended.

I've also trained with Shrek, and he'll be in WV a few times in 2023 (he's ex-Delta, for those who care): https://sobtactical.com/classes/west-virginia/

Kelly McCann's schedule is not yet up for 2023, but this is where to find it. He usually does 1-2 handgun classes/year plus a bunch of H2H stuff (broke my nose in one of his classes a year ago). He's in Fredericksburg, VA, and his resume is impressive: https://www.kembativz.com/

For newish or prospective instructors (or experienced, for that matter) who want more than just the NRA "I-paid-for-an-instructor-certificate" certificate, I highly recommend Tom Givens' "Three Day Instructor Development" class (I took it in 2018). You have to pass the FBI handgun qual (at FBI Instructor level....90%), Givens' own qual (tougher than the FBI one.....90%), and a written test that was like 80 questions (90%). https://www.eventbrite.com/e/three-...rse-tickets-275276408147?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

Further than 2 hours out, I have to plug ANYTHING at Alliance Police Range in Alliance, OH (about 5 hours for me to get to from Baltimore https://alliancepolicetraining.com/). Especially Will Petty's Vehicle CQB: https://centrifugetraining.com/classes/vcqb-open-enrollment-alliance-oh/

    Training is the way.

tactical shepherd (https://tacticalshepherd.com/collections/training) has a level 1 pistol class coming up and they were doing rifle training with CMCT (https://www.cmctods.com/tactical-firearms-training) last year.

sixeight training (https://www.sixeight.training/book-training) has courses locally.

of these i have only trained with CMCT. I want to take the FPF shotgun class this year

hogarth and erows are the expert on training classes they have so many AARs posted on here. you can go down a rabbit hole of reading AARs

I must confess I had no idea CMCT was still around. I did a carbine class with them back in 2014.

Re: FPF Shotgun, do the Home Defense Shotgun class first, then do Shotgun Skills. Each is a one-day class. Both are excellent.

i think they were gone then came back but the classes are limited couple of carbine and long range rifle classes. i think my last class with cmct was 2016. like i said they were teaming up with tactical Sheppard last year

thanks i was eyeing the sept defense shotgun class.

    Oh, it's comin'!
I may grab the real can of saber red instead of the training can by accident..... just sayin'......

I've never trained with Karl but on your say so at least two of our guys are going down. Possibly more if I can get one of the other carbine guys to commit. The other guy who was going to be our fourth left the outfit and is heading overseas for a while so he's out.

My brother and I were talking about this recently, and via a search I found ICE FDT (https://icefdt.com/). Anyone know anything about them, taken their classes, etc?
Checked out their website. Might be fine. But instructor bios reveal very little practical/professional experience and no instructor certifications beyond NRA. No Rangemaster, Handgun Combatives, CSAT, FLETC, Sig Academy, etc.

Probably fine for basic stuff. That's as far as I'd go with them unless someone chimes in here with a testimonial.

    I like spicy treats!

Like I told you before, I've not yet done FoF with Karl (only advanced handgun). But his reputation among others I trust is solid for FoF, and I can say from experience that he is a SMART dude. So I have faith it'll be worth it.

    Looking forward to meeting.

Who else is in? Or do members here want to NOT learn how to make decisions while carrying a gun? Remember, scenario-based training is not "advanced". If you're carrying a gun now but think you're not ready for scenario-based training, then you really shouldn't be carrying a gun.

It should be a good couple of days. Just kidding about the saber red. Like any reputable FoF instructor, I'm sure Karl will be conducting searches of the scenario players before game time.

    Here's an interesting one.

One of the smartest people in the "training industry", John Hearne (I'll be training with him in September 2023), presenting, online/virtually, for a mere $20, what sounds like a very interesting seminar, "How Paranoid Are You?" Link below:

Here's another resource I've found that would be great for those members for whom $ is tight and travel all but impossible. You can learn from Brian and Shelley Hill of "The Complete Combatant" via Zoom in your own home.

That's the link to their 2023 schedule. There are several iterations of two different online courses. One is called "Reactionary Zones" and the other "Interrupt the Attack Cycle". These could be very useful to those members who have no prior training in pre-attack indicators and other "soft skills". And they are only $40 each. I might take them myself.

I've never trained with them, but their resume (especially Brian's) is VERY impressive. They have presented at the Rangemaster Tactical Conferences I've attended; I just happened to not take their seminars (that conference is an embarrassment of riches every year, and it's tough to do everything you'd like to).

If you'd like to hear Brian, he was recently on an episode of the American Warrior Show, and this is an EXCELLENT interview that goes into everything from his background to training issues to pistol-mounted optics to legal issues and all sorts of other topics:

He is very well-spoken and has been highly recommended to me by numerous people who can differentiate between solid and poor instructors.

Jared Reston will be in Yale, VA in 2+ months:

Check out "Jared Reston - 2-Day Performance Gun Fighting - Mod 1 - Yale, Va" on Eventbrite!

    Date: Sat, Mar 25 ‐ Sun, Mar 26 • 8:30 AM EDT

Location: 20020 Butts Road, Yale, VA 23897

For those of you who don't know of him, I'd suggest a Googling. Been in multiple gunfights and even won one fight in which he was shot 7 times by a Death Ray (.45 ACP).
