A couple of years ago, I went to Bang Steel for their 2 day long rifle course, and shot out of 1200 yards with my .308.

I just got back from visiting again. This time, a guy I met through work (Phil) decided to go and asked me to come along. So I HAD to help out a friend. :)

I did find out, that Dan of Bang Steel has rifles to rent if you do not have a rifle suitable for the course. Phil rented a very NICE shooting Savage for the course. He bought his ammo, Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain .308. During the course, he shot a sub 5" 3 shot group at 800 yards with this combo, so the rifle SHOOTS. It was equipped with an SWFA 12x mil dot scope. At the time I write this, rifle rental is $40 per day, or $25 a day if you leave the brass. :)

Since this was a private course (I was along for the ride for a couple of reasons), things were a bit different, but not that much. Still each day started with some class room work, then out to the range to shoot. We went out to 1000 yards the first day with this "private" course. The second day was spent working on various exercises for Phil, like mil dot ranging, and ranging by trajectory. Also shooting smaller targets at various ranges. Overall, Phil shot 180 rounds over the two days. I went through about 95 rounds, shooting all the same targets, just a few less rounds at each one.

We both had a great time, and both learned a lot. Even though I have been down there 3 times total, I learned something every time I shot there.

Overall, still a GREAT course, and reasonably priced and relatively close (a days drive each way). And FUN.

Next time I go, I want to work the day more like a tactical match. Have Dan select a target to shoot, then have to work out the range, hold, and wind. Trying to spot my own shots and making corrections.

One very cool thing was, I am now seeing the bullet trace. That is, while spotting, I can see the path of the bullet in flight (not always, but many times) and can tell before the bullet hits, if it will be a hit or miss.

I also brought along my Mosin Sniper. Dan's son Forrest, helped out both days. I let him and Phil both shoot it. Forrest took it out to 465 yards on a steel IPSC target. Phil didn't want to take a chance, so "only" shot it at 300 yards. I also managed a couple of hits on the IPSC target at 465. Once I figured out the thumb screw on the scope mount was loose. :) We were shooting PPU 182 grain ammo.

    Again, highly recommended course.
