As most folks on the forum know, we Hooligans enjoy tinkering with options on our firearms. Here's one I'd like your input on. Let me set the stage:

Several years ago a Ruger American Ranch in 300BLK joined our fun. After bedding the rifle in a nice Boyd's stock, adding a muzzle brake made sense if only for looks looks. So I picked up an inexpensive Midwest Industries 30 cal brake, installed it and that was that. The brake never added any accuracy, but it was OK and looked good.

Late last year the Thompson Center Compass .270 arrived (:bullhorn:gathering new caliber range brass is a bad habit!). The rifle is a tack driver! I'm now thinking a muzzle brake makes a lot more sense on a 270 WIN than a 300 BLK rifle.

Both muzzles have the same thread pattern. Moving the muzzle brake from the Ruger to the TC Compass wouldn't be a big deal. Since I only paid $300 for the Compass I'm not looking to invest in a new top of the line muzzle brake.

So, would you repurpose this muzzle brake? Why and/or why not?

Tame the recoil on that .270. 300BO is fine on its own. Of course I vote this way because my Rem 700 .270 BDL has no recoil pad and that hard plastic butt plate destroys my shoulder after a while. Good luck.

Put it on and see how it does.

It is not a one and done, you can take if off if you don't like it.

That's exactly what I figured too so I that's what I did. I haven't torqued the brake fully - it could use another half turn - but it's on tight enough to fire some test rounds.

It just so happens I have some fresh reloads to test it with. Who'd have thunk?

Now you just need a 30 cal suppressor for the 300blk!

I kinda knew that input was coming. :lol2:And that's why I'd never fully torqued the brake on the Ruger. ;);)

I'm blessed with a few enabling Hooligan friends that are tinkering with suppressed 300BLK. I'm pretty sure they'll be pointing me down that road too... :innocent0

    It's ALWAYS something!

    Range Report

Both the TC Compass and the Ruger American Ranch went back to the range this morning. As suspected, swapping the muzzle brake to the 270 was a good idea. The brake served no real purpose on the 300BLK other than looks, but it makes a helluva difference on the 270's recoil.

I posted a short video and this pic of the first test shot with the 270 on today's Hooligan thread. The muzzle blast is now quite different than before - go figure.

But the little Ruger looks so naked now. Definitely need to do something about that... ;)

    :)
