Well it just proves that the AR platform is more effective than any other. It's got more dog kills in Md than any other service rifle.

if overheating was an issue why would they be moving to a heavier barrel unless it was fluted or something?

The SOCOM version of the M4 (M4A1) has a heavier barrel and is designed to be fired on full auto. This is the heavier barrel the above editorial was refering to.
Army tests showed that the standard M4 barrel eroded and warped after 540 rounds were fired in 2 min and 28 seconds
But the 5oz heavier M4A1 barrel was able to shoot 930 rounds in 4 min and 30 seconds with out any barrel damage, durring that test the heat sheild was the lim-fac, it was melted durring the test.
