OK so when a majority of Americans opposed an assault rifle ban she opposed it, and when a majority (more than 2/3 of Americans in the latest Fox News poll) support such a ban she supports it.
Moreover her 2008 statement was when she was angling for all votes, Democrat, Republican, and independent in a general election, and this statement is when she is angling or Democrats , who support assault rifle ban at over 90% in a primary.

Yes she is a scumbag, and ought to be called out. The NRA did so pointedly and intelligently.

But charging a politician with "flip flopping" accusation is not as harmful to the politician as some people think. She is able to claim a legitimacy based on her reflecting the views of her constituents as those constituents' views changed. 2A advocates see this as scummy behavior, but it is not clear that many others will think so. We need to be careful of arguments that only resonate among ourselves, otherwise we are in for some very nasty surprises as the greatest challenges to the 2A in US history are coming up the next couple of years.

If we can't attack the assault rifle ban legislation on its (de)merits, no amount of of cleverness within our own bubble is going to help.

If our takaway, what we learn, from Gillbrand 180 is a "gotcha" moment that we, and only we, see as her sin, than we are learning the wrong lesson. The correct lessons are:
    1) that 2A has gone from being 75% to 80% partisan to 100% partisan
    2) we have no allies in the Democratic party,
    3) the Democrats are profoundly emboldened and are not frightened of any political cost on major gun control -- it is no longer a "third rail" it itself has gone 180 and is a litmus test
    4) that you can love Trump or hate him, but if we don't hold onto the White House we wont be talking about red flag, we will be talking about trying to block full on Australian system
