A security clearance or other Fed flags on your FBI jacket MAY generate a hold message from NICS as there may be a flag to refer to another agency or database. It is not Dicks, it is likely that this doesn't seem to be an issue at many gun stores because gun store owners are customer service oriented enough to make sure that their customers have a better explanation.

I didn't read the entire thread. Delays happen all the time. Some people every time, others here and there, some people never. The store whether, Dicks, BBP, or any other has no control over the results of the NICS check.

I blame the Gubermint because in this case they are messing with you not Dick's. Cancel the sale and go to another location you will see what I mean. :banghead:

This gun has been kind of hard to find. I got a nice gift card to bass pro for christmas and i asked them to order it for me and they said their corporate lawyers hadnt approved this gun for sale in MD yet so they cant order it. I went to Dicks and they said its an exclusive model that cannot be ordered it just shows up with their deliveries from time to time and I had to keep checking in.

No the 'DELAY' is not something Dick's is doing, but I can tell you Dicks' policy is to NOT give you your gun until they get a PROCEED, which they will not get if they get a DELAY first. Went round and round with someone at the California store. She said it's a liability thing. "If we give him that gun [after 3 days] and then we get a DENIED, we have to go find that gun." You can't fix stupid.

You might as well go buy it somewhere else.

FWIW - Im no "Federal Agent" but I spent 25+ years as a submarine sonarman and now work as a Fed in that field and have held the clearances/assesses that go along with it the entire time. Within the past 12 months I have bought 3 long guns. Two went through without an issue and for one the FFL was told I had to be submitted for further review. My first and last name are anything but common.

The FBI told me, in the early years of the checks, that they allowed a certain time period for a check to go through. If the computer took longer, the contractor would issue the delay. It didn't have anything to do with what kind of clearances you had, just the fact that more hits took the computer longer and thus you would be put on hold.

I have also seen ( when working part time in a gun shop) where an employee would read off a poorly printed social and get a number wrong. This would also result in a delay.

It is possible that people are experiencing delays today due to the volume of guns being sold which will slow the computers down. Just a SWAG.

The issue is with you and NICS. Not Dicks. When you have a clearance they have to find someone there that can look at your clearance info and such to verify you aren't prohibited. If that person is on another call, in the bathroom etc you get a delay. Simple.

Most likely yes, same issue. Unless you purchased from a private party face to face any sale through an FFL must go through NICS. So just settle in, watch some shows to clear out your DVR or surf YouTube. Forget it exists and when you get the phone call to pick up your gun you'll have a nice happy surprise.

Lol, but I already did all that just waiting for the shotgun to be re-stocked!

I was delayed by NICS for a day earlier this year from a reputable LGS, it's a NICS issue, not Dicks. I was told it could take up to 3 days, got a call the next morning to come back and pick it up.

I worked at a lgs. We had a guy who would be delayed every time he bought a long gun. He would just hang out since we would get the call back to proceed within a half hour. NICS is far from perfect and you can be delayed for the most minor things.
