I've searched a bit and come up a tad short. Is there a thread covering the laws regarding pre-ban AR-15 lower receivers? I have an Engage lower from Sept 2013 I want to sell, but I also was interested in building a carbine. Looking for the legality of a carbine upper on a post-ban lower.

Not looking to be roasted, but would like advice from those "in the know" here.

Someone come along and correct me if I am passing misinformation but Sept 2013 is pre ban and you can put any upper on that puppy. I wouldn't give that one up even if you don't plan on building it right now.

I am aware of what pre and post means. I know there's no difference in how its made, other than the numbers stamped on the side. Has anyone has their build challenged? How would that come into play, if a crime was committed? I want to build one for plinking, and the sale of a pre-ban lower would fund a new built lower. If this isn't the place to ask feel free to shut this thread down.

AFAIK having a pre-ban doesn't increase its value because if it's transferred it's no longer a pre-ban (if you're thinking to sell if for 2x what a lower goes for). Pre-ban status isn't determined by manufacture date but rather by when you took possession of it.

I have a single pre-ban lower and can't see myself parting with it for any reason in the world.

That lower will not be pre-ban for the buyer. You will also need to transfer it at an FFL or MSP barracks.

I don't think a $150 stripped lower is going to fund a complete lower. Around $250 is the cheapest you will see. You can probably find a complete lower build kit for less than $150. Meaning an extra $50 investment will get you a lower that you can build nto whatever you want.

That $150 is being very generous. I bought an Engage upper/lower set for $200.

Lower build kits here for less than $100. A much better deal for you.

    Wow, those are cheap

I have a PSA MOE lower parts kit with a nickel boron coated FCG in my 6.8. Doesn't feel bad for the $61 I paid for it.

Yeah, do not sell a preban lower unless it means saving yourself from foreclosure or something equally dire.

It is worth exactly as much as a post-ban lower, but to you it is effectively priceless because you can build it in to anything you want.

As for legal cases, I haven't heard of any. The MSP guidance is you can do what you want with the lower if it is pre-ban. If you plan to go intentionally commit crimes with it...I think you have a hell of a lot more to worry about than it's legal status. If you aren't committing crimes with it, then it is perfectly legal with any upper combination (so long as you don't some how create a destructive device).
