Just picked up my first bolt action rifle, and one of the things I liked about it was that, while it is compatible with Remington 700 mounts, it also comes with an optional Picatinny rail attachment. Pics below. I figured I would install the rail and for optics get something that can move between this rifle and an AR (haven’t bought the mount yet).

However, this thread made me think twice about that (thread basically shows the importance of tight fit between scope and rifle):

    https://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=216055

Is the rail attachment (scope -> mount -> screw-on rail) going to be sturdy enough, or should I mount something like the Leupold QR specifically designed for the Remington 700? And give up AR compatibility, potentially, for a better mount? The rifle is 6.5 Creedmoor - not the same kick as the 308 in the thread above, but still ...

    Thanks for any advice.

If you want a rail on purpose, it can certianly be satisfactorily done.

But the inherent thing about switching is the very different height of line of sight above bore , between the AR platform and most bolt actions . ie mount height intended for AR mounted on a bolt would be waaay high. Bolt type mounting height on an AR would be too low to be seen through.

Gotcha. Didn’t realize that. Problem solved. :)
