She is a Winchester. Thanks for offering this out there to us! :party29:

    Refinement:

It turns out that there were three blocks of serial numbers assigned to Winchester. Yours falls into the earlier numbers of the third block of numbers.

How about an !879 Trapdoor Springfield rifle, S/N 271813?

Model 1873 rifle with improvements of 1878-79. Your serial number puts it toward the end of that series.

Vol. 1 - No direct hit, but fairly close brackets:
    271786 -- M 84R, Co. F, 6th US Vol. Infantry (as of 1898)
    271839 -- M 84R, 3nd TX Vol. Infantry ("recovered", 8/20/1900)

Vol. 2 - No direct hit, but fairly close brackets:
    271784 -- M 84R, Co. C, 32nd MI Vol. Infantry (as of 1898)
    271850 -- M 84R, Co. G, 160th IN Vol. Infantry (as of 1898

Vol. 3 - No direct hit, but fairly close brackets:
    271737 -- M 73R, Co. E, Battalion of Engineers (issued August, 1884)
    271930 -- M 73R, Co. E, Battalion of Engineers (issued August, 1884)

Note that this data shows how rifles bracketing one of a certain serial number may have very different histories. Note also that the same series of rifles were listed as M 73R at the time of issue, but were listed later as M 84R.

    M1 Garand 844063

Within the first series of numbers assigned to Springfield.

    Vol. 1 - Nothing close

    Vol. 2 - Nothing close

    Vol. 3 - Nothing close

The SRS records came largely from research that was done in military records in the National Archives. It was more common for early records to mention detailed info, such as serial numbers of individual rifles. By the advent of WWII, this level of detail apparently was seen to be unnecessary in unit reports. As a result, there are very few records for M1 Garands, and almost none for M1 Carbines, in this set of data.

    How about m1911 colt 112160. ?

    M 1911 - Earlier part of 1915

Within the range of some pistols sold via the NRA in 1915-16. Are there NRA marks?

Serial number falls within those assigned to Colt. No direct hit, and nearest numbers are very inconsistent (but interesting because of the inconsistency).

Vol. 1 - No close hits, but bracketed within a list of numbers reported by the Texas National Guard, Feb. 1937.

Vol. 2 - Within the range of numbers delivered to the U.S. Army, April 12, 1915. No. 112156 was surveyed (disposed) by the USMC pistol team in Quantico, March 27, 1922. Numbers bracketing your pistol were all over the place.

Vol. 3 - No. 112269 was in Troop H, 14th Cavalry, in 1920. Three pistols from the middle of the 111xxx range were in Siberia in WWI. There's no evident consistency about where these guns were assigned.

Mvee ... you need to give me a break on these others. Please spread them out over a few days, and I'll try to get to them. It takes awhile to do each of these.

Thanks, Sorry if I overwhelmed you a bit. The 1911 is parked and has a wwii replacement slide. The only other thing out of place on this pistol is that there is an Allen screw tapped under mainspring I guess to adjust tension. I thought that bubba did this modification.

Thanks again. It's really nice to learn a little more about these guns. Thanks again.

How far back can you go?

    Spencer carbine serial #31021

    My guess is 1861/1862

These records are actually more complete for the earlier rifles.

Vol. 2 - No direct hit, but some close numbers. You can't assume that these indicate where your rifle was assigned, because they weren't issued in sequence, but this one seems close enough of a bracket to safely say that it's a "maybe".

    30994 Carbine, 1863, Co. K, 6th IL Vol. Cav.
    31021 ...
    31028 Carbine, 1863, Co. K, 6th IL Vol. Cav.

Yours actually falls within a pretty long list of serial numbers for carbines issued to various companies of the 6th IL Vol. Cav.

    https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/6th_Regiment,_Illinois_Cavalry

I've finally been able to locate, and buy, the fourth volume of this series. I don't know if any of you have looked into how scarce these are, and how expensive they are, but the four-volume set has cost me about $1,000.00 ... and that's relatively cheap.

Anyway, I'm going to re-visit some of these earlier postings to see what's in volume 4.

No direct hit on this rifle, but Vol. 4 has some that are much closer. Serial numbers:

    30999
    31014
    31029

All issued to 6th Indiana Vol. Infantry

This doesn't mean that 31021 was issued to the same unit, though. It only means that it's bracketed by serial numbers that are recorded as having been issued to the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

    Thanks for the offer.

    I have A Model 1868 Springfield Trapdoor S/N 20251 and a Model of 1917 Eddystone S/N 781809.

Volume 1 - No direct hit. Closest are 20069 and 20498. The first was reported as damaged by the 8th Cav. The second was reported as "captured from Indians." This, unfortunately imples nothing about your particular rifle.

Volume 2 - No direct hit, but 20201 is listed as a model 73 carbine. It was "surveyed" (destroyed) at Fort Keough on -1/29/1878.

Volume 3 - No direct hit, but 20161, also a model 73 carbine, was part of the inventory of the 10th Cav. at Ft. Concho in 1876.

    Volume 4 - 20247, a model 73 carbine, Co F, 9th Cavalry

Awesome karma, thanks Machodoc! I have one I haven't been able to get searched yet:

Remington New Model Army revolver .44 (Civil War)
    Serial # 68252

Vol. 1 - No hit, but listed in the seial numbers for 1863-65.
Vol. 2 - No hit, or anything close, but interesting that a few are listed in the 65xxx range that were from Co. I of 1st MD volunteer cavalry. Overall, though, there aren't many listings for Remington New Model revolvers.

Volume 4 - Still nothing close, but bracketed by guns issued to the 16th Indiana Mounted Infantry.
