Start by filling out a BATFE form 1, ensure that is is not shorter than 29" overall, sending in the $200, fingerprints, and waiting 9 months.

Once you get your stamp back, get it engraved and convert it to an SBR.

Thought that was only if the firearm was being sold.

BATFE requires your information engraved on any title 2 (Class 3) firearm created on a form 1.

I believe you are thinking of requirements for building an 80% firearm.

This is what I have been suspecting of lately.

What makes a brace different than a stock?

It's some vague distinction of a brace having not been designed to be fired from the shoulder.

Try a few and see if they work for you. Pick one and save a ton of cash and hassle.

    Yup.

And the issue right now is that ALL of the pistol brace stuff is solely at the whim and discretion of the ATF. If they decide tomorrow that all pistol braces are illegal stocks, then they're all illegal stocks. Or you could wind up like the guy in Ohio who got dragged through court because some ATF guy got a bug up his ass and decided to go after him over a "pistol" with a foregrip on it.

Having a stamped SBR exempts you from all of that garbage. Plus, if you e-File your Form one, they're coming back within a few weeks right now instead of the six+ months of paper forms.

It says so on the box when it arrives. Seriously. Also, a brace isn't designed to adjust and generally is constructed differently than a regular stock. That's about the only difference.
