My buddy Chris and I went up to the National Forest land today to try for some yotes. Ive hunted em a few times here and never been lucky. In fact I've had then catch my scent and take off only to find tracks on my way out in the snow. Today was different. We started on the trail which is at 8,200ft and continued up until we went off on a game trail. Our first spot we plunked down and I started to call with a raspy cottontail hand call. No shit, less than ten minutes in, here comes this yote trotting to my right FIFTEEN FEET away. She came in from behind us. The sound of my safety coming off spooked her and she took off running. I hit her on the move at about 15-20 yards and dropped her. AWESOME DAY! For this time of year the fur was spectacular so we skinned it out. We both took pictures with it. I got her with my 1945 Springfield M1.

I use all handmade calls I order from a guy on Predator Talk forum. His screen name is Youngdon.

You earned it! 8,000 feet (assuming you live at around 5,000 ft) can be a little work. Great last pic - that 1945 rifle is in terrific shape. 18-inch barrel on it?

Thanks! It's a standard 24in. It is a CMP rebuilt I got when Duffys was Kens Outdoors in 2007. All WW2 parts except the stock, and Criterion match barrel.

This is actually my first yote.

Oh my lord. That's not a coyote rifle! You hVe to have a silencer... A scope and a big ass light bulb on top of it. What were you thinking!

If I had a scope I would have just had to throw the rifle at the thing!

Will you collect a bounty? In SW VA you will get $50 for each one you shoot.

No, nothing like that here. The ranchers just love when they get blasted especially since calving season just ended. Open season year round and no limits like most places.

Beautiful. I backpacked in the National Park and National Forest in Northern Colorado--right where the two meet--two years ago. Absolutely stunning. I went to Medicine Bow after that. I would love to go back there to hunt one day.

Yes, those upper elevation animals prime up earlier. In another month it would have been super nice. Hopefully you can hunt lower country all winter and get some really pretty ones.
