    Chad,

I've been looking at the new Nighthawk Advanced Armament 1911. It looks cool minus some of the geeked out uber tactical details. This gun has me interested in suppressed 1911s, but not $2800 interested.

    http://www.nighthawktactical.com/Advanced-Armament-Pistol.html

What do you have to do to set up a 1911 to run well when suppressed? Is there a good source out there for barrels that are already set up for a suppressor, or is it better to just get a regular 6" barrel and have it threaded?

Once the gun is set up to run suppressed, is there anything to be changed or swapped out to make the gun run well without the suppressor? Thanks.

The 1911 can be problematic when suppressed. They tend to be very hard on the lower barrel lugs (Feet), and tend not to like a tight Barrel, Slide and Bushing setup.

Any threaded barrel compatible with a .45 suppressor will work, but likely wont cycle the gun without a (LCD) "booster" on the sound suppressor.

Heres what I have done to make them work:

Polish the underside of the Slide to reduce Slide friction on the rounds in the magazine.

Install a Briley Bushing, it allows super tight lockup, but allows the gun to be more sloppy overall when unlocked, you get good accuracy and reliability.

Stork Lake barrels will be the most cost effective Barrel that comes threaded, get a gunsmith fit one and have it fit but not super tight. Polish the Ramp, and Chamber when its fit.

Install a EGW Slide Stop, cheap Slide Stops can and will break from the increased load on the lower Barrel Lugs and Slide Stop Pin.

Install an EGW Squared Firing Pin Stop.

You will have to play with Recoil Spring weights to find the one the gun likes with the Suppressor attached.

The taller Sights are something I havent played with, and I would be curious who supplies Nighthawk with the tall Sights.

Im converting my S.A. to Suppressor use at the moment in the way described above. Ill be using a SWR .45 HEMS II Sound Suppressor.

Just a heads up the high maintenance part of this setup is the barrels, it will wear the Lower Lugs, and the barrel threads make the muzzle super thin, and threads are known to break off.

Without sight work your looking at about $550 with labor to get a 1911 setup for suppressor use, not countin the sound suppressor.

Thanks for the info. :) Sounds like it would be a fun gun, but might be more trouble than it is worth.

The god news is it dont need a dedicated host gun. I can setup any 1911 for this.

Some of your 1911's already have half of this work done, all I would have to do is fit a briley and a barrel. The base gun would be untouched, I would fit the "Suppressor Conversion" parts not the base gun.

    The parts would be:

    Recoil Spring
    Barrel with Link
    Briley Bushing with Ring

Oh and I forgot, FLGR help on supressed 1911's too, not sure whay but they do.

One thing that I see as a problem is finding sights that will work. The Heinie sights used by Nighthawk are pretty nice, but the slide on my Fusion is cut for Novaks. I've been searching the net, and the Heinies are the only suppressor ready sights I can find.

cland what do you think is the best ready made platform for suppression pistol, and rifle?

Pretty much any rifle can be supressed, subsonic rifle rounds tend to be finnicky, bolt guns are best for that. The AK47 will cycle subsonic rounds but its a poor platform to suppress (Sound Wise)

Pistol wise, the USP Tactical and HK MK23 is king.

So Heine makes them? Good to know. :)

    True enough. :D

Sounds good Chad. Since it doesn't have to be a dedicated gun, it might well be worth it to have you fit up a spare barrel and bushing for suppressed use when I have you build that Fusion kit up for me. :)

That I can do, we need to figure out some sights, or you could just ger an Osprey Offest Can, or a YHM Maxim offest can.

Considering we are talking supressors, question I'm thinking about getting my CZ75BD (9mm) running for a supressor, do you know of any other repairs / replacements I should do before just buying the supressor and Threaded Barrel? Do you know anything about EFK Firedragon threaded Barrels?

CZ will likely need some recoil springs to find a happy medium. Break the gun in well before trying another barrel or adding a can.

Do you know anything about EFK Firedragon threaded Barrels?

They are not very good barrels, they are on par with Lone Wolf Glock Barrels.

Get a premium or mid grade replacement:

    Barsto
    Jarvis
    Storm Lake

You can also have ADCO extend and thread your factory one.

CZ barrels tend to have rough chambers and dont suppress well when the factory one is extended.

Canuck is the difference with the suppressor on the gun really worth the cost and fuss? I keep reading where some folks say a .45 ACP isn't really worth suppressing because it still ends up being loud?

I would be happy to let you sample. The 230gr .45" projectile as commonly loaded is subsonic. Suppressing it makes it shooting safe without muffs in my experience. I have only run the evo dry. Wet would likely take another 5 to 9 dbs out. It ain't hollywood quiet but its a fun toy.

I heard from a really tall ugly guy that you are back to work. I'm around wednesday if that works for you otherwise it'll be a couple of weeks as I'm about to go out on a couple of jobs. Lemme know....

Thanks Canuck. I'd love to have a go with one of your suppressed guns. A couple weeks sounds good since I have to work this Wednesday. My schedule will be changing pretty soon though, and weekdays will most likely be my days off since this Thursday I finish up that big job I've been working on for the last 9 months. :innocent0 I'll let you know, and thanks for the offer and the info.
