I came across a Maverick 88 pump in 12g today. Has the extended tube for 8 rounds and comes with the standard stock, tactical stock, and a pistol grip. The previous owner added a heat shield as well. If it was fired at all, you can't tell. It's listed for $200. Anyone have any opinions about these?
    Thanks

Maverick 88 is the Mexican Produced Version of the Mossberg 500. Its a good shotgun and if you can find it for $200, thats a good price. IYAM, I prefer the 500 over the 88 if i had to chose bn the too, it feels like its build better to me but its a good shotty for its price!

Have one beside my bed full of 00 goodness.

Bought back around 1997ish for $120.

Works fine for me. Never had an issue out of it.

    Doesn't have the extended mag.

Good gun. It was my first shotty a long time ago. Sits
in my safe wearing a Blackhawk pistol grip stock kit with an 18.5 barrel and a Surefire light on the end. Great for
HD, bad news for would be home invaders.

Thanks for the input. Seems like I can find a new one for similar $$. As this one had no visible wear (to me anyway) and includes a total of 3 different stocks and a heat shield, it seems like a decent deal. If nothing else, my kids will think it looks cool...

Another good vote for it here!

-got my 88 12 gua. when I was 10 (first real gun) from Super Kmart in Hanover, PA. On sale for like $140 back in '96. Has been and still is a great shotgun, is even accurate with slugs! Get it!

First gun I bought, day after I turned 18. I still have it, shot it at the Zombie shoot. It's my only and go-to 12 gauge. I'll never sell it.

It's wearing a Mossy 500 18.5" barrel, heat shield, Meprolight tritium bead sight, TacStar side saddle, Mossy forend/slide action tube assembly. I parkerized it and painted the receiver to match. Love it.

Definitely a decent shotgun. Almost all of the parts are directly interchangeable with the 500. I have an 88 as well as two 500's and everything is the same except for the receiver and trigger housing. The 500 has a receiver mounted safety while the 88 uses a cross-bar in the trigger.

The bolt assembly, bolt slide, cartridge stop, cartridge interrupter, elevator, slide, magazine tube assembly, barrel, and stock will all interchange between an 88 and a 500.

I do prefer the receiver mounted safety of the 500, but that's a small niggle for the discount in price.

IIRC, a subtle difference between the 88 and the 500 is the thread on the bolt that holds the stock on. If you change the stock on an 88 to one made for the 500, make sure the threads match. On the 88, I read the thread is metric, and on the 500, it's standard.

I put on a Knoxx SpecOps stock on my 88 that was made for a 500. It fit perfect.

I had an issue fitting a Knoxx Stock to a Glenfield-branded Mossberg though...

The 88 is worth it an for $200 it's a great deal.
