It looks like post Bruen Maryland is ahead of both New Jersey and New York in carry license applications.

    New Jersey
In the 20 months since Bruen about 33,000 applications.

    New York
Applications jumped from 258 in 2019 to 6,751 last year.

Went to accepted to ready for investigator back to accepted nothing further
Look at the post above yours took about 40 days. Check the more recent approvals and figure the average number of days between Accepted to Approved and you will get a pretty good idea of what to expect.

I see a bunch of people putting an NCIS date in their posts. Will I get an email or anything that says it's in NCIS? Or is taht when it goes for investigation?

I read that it often goes from accepted to ready for investigation back to accepted. That's what mine did. I understand that's not unusual.

Lots of people seem to be copying, pasting, and perpetuating the wrong acronym. It's NICS, not

There won't be an email. One day it shows up on the upper left of your application (can be seen if you "print" your app).

Ok, that's fine, but same question applies. Will I get an email that NICS is being completed? What's NICS mean to the average applicant for an MD carry permit?

See my text below the picture. No email. It just means that they are at the stage where a NICS check has been run. It's essentially meaningless in the big picture for purposes of prognostication.

It is meaningless as long as you pass. The only two dates with significance in tracking progress are the date your application is accepted and the date that it is approved. If you look at a number of completed recent tracking posts and figure the average number of days between their accepted and approved dates you will know when to expect your approval give or take a few days.

This thread has over 11,000 posts going back almost to when Bruen was released (June 23, 2022) and that number has been both longer and shorter than what it is currently running. At the height of the application flood some members actually actively tracked that data and reported it in this thread. They also tracked all the other notices which have varied in both what they were and if they notified applicants and the accepted to approved metric is the only one that has proven reliable.

I am the OP so I have followed this thread since July 9, 2022. Everyone is welcome to go back over all the posts to verify what I am saying is true.

My bad, I don't know why I didn't see that line of text, and I've never hit print application. It NICS was dated the day after the application was accepted.

    NO
The typical NICS check takes 30 seconds.

The NICS conducts background checks on people who want to own a firearm or explosive, as required by law.
    NICS Process
When a person tries to buy a firearm, the seller, known as a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), contacts NICS electronically or by phone. The prospective buyer fills out the ATF form, and the FFL relays that information to the NICS. The NICS staff performs a background check on the buyer. That background check verifies the buyer does not have a criminal record or isn't otherwise ineligible to purchase or own a firearm. Since launching in 1998, more than 300 million checks have been done, leading to more than 1.5 million denials.
    Firearm Sale

    NICS Availability
The NICS is customarily available by phone 17 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays (except for Christmas). Calls may be monitored and recorded for any authorized purpose. The NICS E-Check is available 24/7.

    NICS Services

The FBI provides full service to the FFLs in 31 states, five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. The FBI provides partial service to four states. The remaining 15 states perform their own checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

What's NICS mean to the average applicant for an MD carry permit?
Absolutely nothing. It's one of 27 + random steps during the investigation.

I applied a few days after you, so I’m also hoping for mine this week. Yours got accepted a lot quicker than mine though! Fingers crossed!

I keep checking multiple times a day to see if anything has changed. I won't know what to do with my free time once I receive it. LOL.
