I have found a 16" 30-30 lever carbine with 170gr soft points to be worse.
I've fired the same and agree. When the stock is as small as the long edge of a deck of playing cards and covered with brass, the damnable thing want to cut it's way through your shoulder.

30-30 lever actions have got to be some of the best bush/truck guns ever manufactured. Yes, they kick. Not heavy like pre century bolt action battle rifles.

I do have a Winchester Ranger mdl 94, it's punishing as remarked, but I've been complimented by a friend on how well it shoots/marks targets.

Yup, that and .32 win special are birds of a feather.

*****Geez, you're not wrong. Just brutal. I had on a shooting jacket and the 30-30 still felt horrible to me. I'm not sure how heavy the load or bullets were. Really a painful experience compared to more modern bolt actions with nice butt pads, etc..

Cowboys back in the day were some tough hombres - except mebbe the dudes from Brokeback Mountain.... they seemed the more sensitive type... :innocent0

Will agree that this gun punishes with recoil. Only shoot so often.

A huge amount of it is in the butt pad and stock ergo. Just slip a recoil pad on it, and you are about where a modern rifle is, in terms of a recoil pad. I have a sporterized 1903A3. Former owner just cut 2" off the barrel, but the stock is also cut up. So the whole thing is about a pound lighter than a normal 1903A3. From a bench it SUCKS in light clothes. I have a slip on recoil pad on it permanently. It isn't all that thick, but it is a pleasure to shoot with that on there, rather than the steel butt plate trying to meet my shoulder blade on every shot. Just the butt plate, I'lll have a nice bruise after 10 rounds from a bench. With the slip on recoil pad my shoulder is barely sore for a day after 40 rounds from the bench, not a mark on my shoulder. That's about what my Sako Forester in .308 will do to me after 40 rounds from the bench.

My M1 carbine is the only gun I own or have shot with a steel (or brass) butt plate where your shoulder isn't rude to you after the fact. My M1 Garand will still dig in after awhile, but it is heavy enough and with the gas system, it is almost as tame an experience as my 1903A3 with that 1" recoil pad slipped on, despite the sporterized 1903A3 weighing about 2lbs less. Hell, my SKS kind of sucks after a few clips from the bench if I am in a t-shirt (though I've never had it leave bruise. A few marks from the stitching on my t-shirt yes).

I've owned guns a little under 10 years and I turn 40 imminently. So I am no old fart, but I don't play the recoil game that beats the crap out of me. I have zero interest in that. I mean, a ton of recoil, so long as it doesn't punish you is fine and can sure get me to smile. But I have no need to make it worse on me than it needs to be. For a gun I actually want and plan to shoot, and not something that is a wall hanger or is collected 95% for historical interest, it is either going to be modified to have a real modern butt pad or I'll just buy the version that has one as part of it. Like a lever gun, Maybe a .357 lever gun I'd get one with wood furniture and a metal butt plate, but anything stouter than that will have a real butt pad on it.

I love me my Dan Wesson 44, but full power cartridges are my limit for enjoyment. Magnum loaded cartridges for it? Especially heavier ones? No thanks. Oh, I'll shoot a couple cylinders of some screaming 240gr or 300gr loads a couple of times a year from it (or someone else's 44), but then I am good. Back to my 240s at 1200fps. Actually, one thing I am appreciating with my S&W27-2 with its 8 3/8" barrel, full power magnum loads have lots of fun blast and fireballs (especially H110 loads), but it is heavy enough and .357 mild enough it doesn't beat up my hands or wrists. That said, I don't want to beat up my gun too much, so mostly 357 loads around 1000fps and 158gr.

Mine shoots very well with the bayonet deployed. If it stays folded back, groups open up a little and move about 8" to the left @ 100 yards
I lined the barrel channel with adhesive cork strips both top and bottom which seems to dampen the harmonics substantially and tightened groups right up.
A brass sleeve made from thin sheet brass over the front sight post allows me to adjust the elevation.

A five shot group @ 50 yards with my hand loads followed by a single shot after sight adjustment. POI was the center which places the shot at the correct elevation @ 100 yards.
I could not be happier with my little cannon.

So if you adjust the front sight to the left, that should correct for the non-deployed bayonet?

Adjusting the front sight to the left will move the shots to the right. But still, the shot groups will not be as tight unless the bayonet was extended.

Not C&R but the most recoil punishing gun I have, is my Browning 300wsm A-Bolt. It has a synthetic stock which is very light. You literally feel like the gun shot you in the shoulder each time you pull the trigger.

It's one of the only guns I really remember that I often flinch before squeezing the trigger. :sad20:

Sounds like you need a silencer and a bipod on there for bench shooting.

Another one of Ivan’s brothers demanded range time today. These Mosins are SO pushy.

Man! I just COULD NOT get into the groove today shooting. I only brought 20 rounds again, but was all over the target with the first 14. I FINALLY settled down for the last quarter of them and attained a little tight shot groups. Was trying to get consistency, not bullseyes. But like deer hunting, horns are nice (like bull eyes) if you get them…

This particular Mosin is dialed in high @ 100 yards. I need to get a front sight tool for these Ivan’s and start getting them all dialed in. Right now I am just joyously blasting away because I have oodles of cheap milsurp ammo for these suckers.

Also have destroyed my target frame during this range session. I make these frames myself, just a PITA to repair them.

That rifle is regulated with the bayonet extended.
