Around 150-200 rounds ball, with 2 mag full with each mag of carry ammo mixed in. I do things like fill the bottom half of the mag with carry and the top with ball, and vs versa. In my mind it simulates the mag function with carry ammo with out using as much of it.

About one or two mags, I’ve never had a Glock that didn't Glock - If I ever switch brands, then probably 1k plus before I trust it.

I have had 2 used revolvers that would light strike about 1 out of 25 rounds only in double action. The first one I knew was non functional when I got it so no big surprise. The second one was a surprise. That taught me shoot at least 50 rounds before calling it good.

If that was my experience, then I would do the same. But owning and shooting almost every Glock model Since they first came out without even a single malfunction I have 100% confidence in Glock.

When you buy a new gun for carry, what kind of round count do you look at before you are confident enough to carry it?

I bought a new G19-MOS and I've got about 200 rounds through it now and I carried it today for the first time. I was confident in it's ability to function in case of need.
I usually shoot a minimum of 200 rounds of range ammo to get comfortable with gun. Then 2 mags of carry ammo to make sure no issues with that ammo. After that, I’ll mix range and carry ammo (every other round) in 1 or 2 mags to see if both shoot similar. (I pick range ammo that is close in MV and ME as my carry ammo.)

    I need to do that.
You do. And registration is open:

I've got a new P365XL to break in. I should at least put a few rounds on paper first... :innocent0 but I might just take it to the match unfired and "send it"

(:secret: Shooting a gun for the very very first time at a match is really not a good idea...that's why I'll have my trusted P365 with me as a backup.)

2-300 and I'll top load a few of them with carry ammo. Glocks will run out of the box but I still clean & lube everything. I also try my best to wipe it all pretty much dry so my appendix carry lint doesn't stick to it during the week between use/wipe downs.

Shot a box of 50 thru my revolver.

    No failure to feed.

    No failure to extract.

    :draw:

I say this as a Revolver aficionado:

Revolvers Can malfunction; and / or be defective out of the box .

Yes , there are fewer things to go wrong . Yes , less common than semi's . Yes , a knowledgeable person can visually and tactile check a DA Revolver for 90% plus of problems in 15 seconds , or explain all the checks performed in 5 minutes .

But out of spec chambers and/ or headspace pretty much need live fire to find .

And yes , I've seen it many times .

Desirable is subjective and context dependent. But I will talk about minimum baselines. ( Two Part)

    1. Establish baseline reliability with name brand , made in USA FMJ . 50d is absolute minimum, 100 is better . Any malfunction resets the count .

    2. (If different) Then test with your preferred flavor of defensive ammo . Absolute minimum is box of 50 , minus one gun load if no malfunction.

2.5 If trying a Different defensive load, repeat #2 .

500 rounds on smaller pocket guns (P3AT, PM9, DB9) based on my experience. 200 rounds on guns like the G26, Sig 229 or P365.

Before carry? That's hard as I don't have a ton of experience that way. I had all my current guns well before my W&C so they had a reasonable track record by then. But, I do try to take anything new to the range a couple times in the first couple weeks. Buy gun, clean and lube gun, shoot two boxes FMJ, clean gun and lube, shoot two boxes FMJ. If everything appears to be fine without malfunction (so far, outside of the first two magazines, it always has) I will run several magazines of carry ammo (currently 124gr Gold Dots is my go to, but I'll shoot a magazine or two of 124gr HST as well as I have a fair amount of that). I try to run a couple mags of carry stuff every six months as well (use up what lives in the mags and refresh with new stuff). Carry ammo is expensive. I have enough to let me run this pattern for awhile, though.

In the distant past when I got my first good carry gun with my MA LTC, it was a police trade in and I think I put through a couple boxes of FMJ and a magazine of Black Talons (I couldn't afford much more, back then). It never jammed.

Modern guns are pretty reliable right out of the box in my (admittedly not comprehensive) experience. Not counting 22s, I'm not sure I've ever had an unreliable pistol. I sometimes have trouble with the first couple magazines; but after that it all seems to settle in. Shooting a bunch seems to be more about my relationship to the gun than anything else.

A fun way to put a hundred and fifty or so rounds through it (while getting some draw and handling practice) would be to run it through an action shooting match...like steel challenge, or something :innocent0

I did this many years ago with 3rdRcn (Terry RIP).
I sucked but it was fun.

I'm sure "sucked" is a very relative term...unless you kept putting rounds on target waiting for it to go down. We "stop the threat" by ringing the red target. ;)
You should give it another go. Bring Dr. T out. Though...I have to admit, it will be more fun in a couple months when the weather is nicer. When the rifle range is sloppy, or that partially thawed greasy over frozen mess, we just can't do a whole lot of movement. I'm not thrilled with the forecast for this weekend...though it would still be a great way to break in a new gun.

As an extra irrelevant aside to this thread drift...Blaster is obviously a gun guy on top of being LEO. I'm sure he didn't really suck. :rolleye12 Over the years we've had some active LEO's participate, at Delta and elsewhere, who were clearly not gun guys, and...yikes! These were not any recent participants...so no one should feel targeted. I'm biting my tongue very hard, so I will just reiterate: LEO's are not automatically and intrinsically gun guys. :innocent0

Depending on application, pocket pistol 6+1, iwb pistol 10+1, otw 15+1
