I had an Instructor give me a hard time about qualifying with a RDS equipped pistol, but he didnt prohibited me from using it to qualify. RDS equipped pistols seem to bother some handgun instructors. Quality RDS that are mounted properly are quite reliable.

In another instance an instructors assistant tried to question me about the "enhancements" on my pistol. The assistant said it shouldn't be done to a carry gun. When the lead instructor overheard the comment, he approached and told the assistant that he was barking up the wrong tree and to leave me alone.

Why? Maybe they are OC'ing. Its a wear and carry permit, not a concealed carry permit. This isn't Florida, we can carry our guns openly with a permit.

And yes, I deeply feel the irony in saying that MD > FL in one respect.

I don't see an issue in someone qualifying with what is easiest for them. I've been tempted to use my Buckmark as it is extremely accurate and very easy to shoot. No way I'd carry a 6" bull barrel 22 for anything other than maybe squirrel hunting.

I have holsters for all of my guns. Almost all are OWB holsters. And yup, even my 6.61" barrel Glock 21L will fit in one of my OWB holsters (it is not a Kydex). I have a leather IWB holster that'll fit my Cz50 and Yugo 70 if I really wanted to carry them IWB. I also have a (vertical) shoulder rig that will fit a G19 or Cz82 in it and easily conceal under a jacket.

At some point I'll get a "proper" micro 9 and IWB holster. But I am mostly not getting my permit to carry concealed. I am mostly getting it to be exempt from all of the stupid transport restrictions and someday be able to legally carry in state forests and parks for hiking and camping. Sure, to also be able to carry concealed if I ever DO feel I need to. I just think that is likely to be rare for me.

There is no need for a holster for the Qualification. All shooting is done from the low ready position. Some instructors may want students to have holsters on the range just for the convenience and safety of moving around without hands on guns. Holsters are used in part of the classroom instruction. There is also no need for the gun to be as accurate as a bull barreled Buckmark.

*****I've done something like this as well for folks well versed with firearms but who have high expectations of themselves, or feel pressure because they think everyone else is watching them. I've done a "practice round" and the pressure was off and they just kicked ass. After the "practice round" I just told them they did so well that they shouldn't even bother with the "test". Everyone leaves happy.

The best way to remove stress , is to shoot the COF Backwards ! I.e. longest distance first , and move closer .

Pretty sure MSP sets what the minimum standard is but the instructor can go beyond that if they want. My instructor didn't us a B-27 it was smaller and it had to land within the circle rings out side the circle on the black silhouette counted as 0 point's. Everyone passed in the class with a range from 80%-85% ( minimum %70) . I didn't necessarily see it as a bad thing as it made the class focus more instead of blindly shooting down range .

Not minimum standard, they are setting the standard that is supposed to be adhered to.
Instructors not following that are morons.
They can teach more rigorous ideas, even more difficult shooting exercises but they shouldn’t be incorporated into the qualification shoot because they feel like it. Stuff like that will come back to haunt us

    Says who?

If you pass the MSP minimum, but get failed by Instructor Operator, you just got screwed.

    See miles71's post on consistency.

Maybe the grocery cashier can charge you extra money because they think you look like can afford it .....

Bingo. As usual you speak the truth Sir!

Well, I guess Peter North will not be able to qualify with what he shoots best. :)
If he can put holes in the paper at the required distances, reload as fast as required, and can be fired by hand without shouldering it, I suspect that would be considered reasonable to qualify on it.

So we are clear, any or all of those would be remarkable accomplishments for what we are talking about.

There is no timing on the reload, Mr. North is good to go ;)

It would have taken everything I had to not have a "discussion" with the assistant.

My instructor said that if you qualify with a semi auto the carry permit is only good a semi auto. If I wanted to carry a revolver I would have to complete another qualification course. What’s the real deal?

Your instructor is an idiot, there is no such restriction on qualification for the MD W&C permit.

I have minor mods to my glock 19 that I qualified with. My instructors comments were “oh nice. I like what you’ve done with it” in a non-ironic way.
