I'm excited for our garden at the new place. Aside from the figs, asparagus, pears, and grapes already here, we just tilled in a garden. I plan to keep it basic this year and grow tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. Maybe some zucchini.

How do you keep the birds and bugs from eating your pears on the tree? I want to plant fruit trees but I’ve never seen any of my neighbors solve the bird and bug problem.

No idea. We just bought the place in the fall and the tree was an overgrown mess with rotten pears hanging on it. It's now slightly less overgrown. We had a giant old apple tree where we came from and they critters mostly left that lone until the hit the ground.

So I got my new beds built and filled with a topsoil/compost mix. Should I consider any fertilizer?
If it’s good compost you should be fine. It’s a bit of a pain but once it all gets settled you may want to try one of those home soil test kits. That might help you pinpoint if you need to add any specific amendments. I made the mistake of just adding fertilizer (some is good more is better right?) when I started out and I ended up with magnificent green, leafy, vigorous plants without much produce due to too much nitrogen.

PSA - frost/freeze watches/warnings up for tonight/tomorrow morning. If you have anything that just started coming up you may want to cover.

Was hoping to plant some potatoes this afternoon. Will have to do the Midnight Gardening Association thing after work later in the week.

Managed to run the tiller. Shouldn't have skipped arm-day at the gym. Beastly machine took me for a drag. Chickies were eagerly eyeballin' the easy-to-dig soil.

Getting things ready. Heirloom seeds are doing well. Including the Roma seeds harvested from my garden last year. Tilled my patch of dirt. It is a bit wet to finish, but have to start somewhere.
Private growing area is working as planned.

I use neem oil to keep bugs down.

I dont really have a bird issue. Will deal with that if it comes up. I do have alot of predator birds in this area. So that may be in my favor.

Planted the garden today (Midnight Gardener's Association photo attached.) Potatoes are on the right side - low-growing plants on the southern exposure. Tomatoes, red onions, bell peppers, zucchini, and cabbages make up the rest. Haven't done cabbages before. Worst case, they'll go to the chickens.

Freeze warning is back. Had to take off the irrigation timer, drain the hoses, and get out all the plant covers I could come up with. Chances this is the last time?

This pic is a week or two old. We are all planted up and onto growing.

Stupid weather! I just gone done covering my potatoes and apple trees what a pain in the ass that was in 25mph winds. The lettuce, kale, peas and spinach should be fine and everything else is still inside.

Got my garden planted last week for the most part. Started early with lettuce, kale and Brussel sprouts. I put in a mix of carrots, peppers, cucumbers, peas, bush beans, and tomatoes. I wasn’t watching the weather last night and it looks as if the cucumbers didn’t make it. All covered up tonight. I also have some garlic from the fall and onions going as well.

Anyone have any luck with trying artichokes? I planted some last year and wintered them, but it doesn’t look like they returned. My Bambi fence raised bed worked well last year, so I may have some veggies this year!

Last cold snap this morning. Tomatoes can go out. I got 2 rows of three cattle panels for growing about 45, or so, Amish paste tomato plants for me and the neighbors. Then one cattle panel for some Big Boys for sammiches.

I got a pound of silver queen corn to plant. Sugar snap peas are coming up, beets are popping up. Will plant a couple rows of Okra to try. The neighbors told me they would show me how to cook it. Me and the daughter were not sold on it last year yet. It is free from seed I saved and the garden is damn near and acre in my neighbors place.

I got a crap load of green peppers and Jalapeno coming up. Slow to start with the coolness in the basement. Even going to try some eggplant this year. Can't grow zucchini here. I think its the neighbors fruit trees. We are overloaded with squash bugs and my buddy can grow them a couple miles away. Told him I will trade this Toms for Zuccs.

Potatoes don't care about this cold. Peas either. both looking ok. Lettuce I put in didn't take. old seed.
For the sprouts in the basement, Anaheim chile, Rutgers -Better Boy -Roma tomatoes, Yellow Squash, English Cukes -Straight eight Cukes. Basil and Dill. I have two heating mats for the seedlings. They sprout super quick! Worth the $.
I'm so ready to put them in the ground. This is what I did last weekend. Three of us. Two days. 30' x 72'. Gettin there.
