    Good morning,

I live in Silver Spring and am looking to stock up on some 5.56. The local gun shop (Atlantic Guns) moved its downtown Silver Spring shop to Rockville late last year, and so I'm looking for a shop on this side of the Beltway within a half-hour's drive for rounds and parts. What shops have you found with decent availability and prices within MoCo/HoCo/AA?

    Thanks!

With all due respect, I highly doubt you're going to find the combo of good prices and good availability. This is nationwide, not just MoCo MD.
Be prepared to pay close to, or above $1 per round for quality brass cased ammo.

The guys at Atlantic are still worth your patronage, even if you're going to Rockville Pike. From Silver Spring? As long as you don't happen to hit some horror show on the beltway, it's well within your 1/2-hour radius from Silver Spring. As I type this on a Monday morning, Google Maps (which has real-time traffic tracking data) shows the new Atlantic store is only 25 minutes from downtown Silver Spring. That's not bad.

BUT: they are still at the mercy of the current supply chain and demand situation, so you're not going to feel like you found a bargain on 223 there (or anywhere else) for long time. But I was in there late last week, and there was ammo to be had.

Note that they are working on somewhat abbreviated hours, are staying busy, and still often have a COVID waiting list at the door that have you cooling your heels in the parking lot for a few minutes while they manage the county mandated head count in the store. Good for them that they have the problem of too many people in buying stuff.

I don't have any experience with their Rockville shop yet, but how do they compare to Engage? I was at the latter last Thursday as I was in the area for work...either of those shops would definitely be in the half-hour reach, but it would be nice to visit a shop on this side of the Beltway in that radius.

Atlantic and Engage are both good gun shops, they just have a different vibe. Once you're at one, you're a pretty short drive to the other. So: do both!

With all due respect, you haven't been paying attention to ammo availability and prices lately, have you? The answer's the same now as it was 3 months ago; availability is hit or miss and prices are high

I definitely have been keeping tabs, and hate bots keeping prices high as much as the next guy. I've built two AR-platform pistols and one MD-compliant AR rifle from last May till now, and definitely have felt the pain of feeding them. Until now, I've been rationing what I bought over the last year...looking to restock from local sources and start the slow burn again.

As a side note, Elite Shooting Sports in VA has 5.56 55gr at $15/box of 20, five box limit. I was out there this weekend to sight in a new LPVO mount and shot what I bought with a little left over to put back in the cache.

This is my life with 7N6, lol. Let's do all paper for a few matches, make those losers on the squad do some pasting.

Anyways, back on topic, ordering online is where it's at for ammo, and really always has been. Get on Discord, monitor in-stock notifications, and buy a pile. Just be aware that PSA will not ship ammo to MoCo.

It might be more than 30 mins, but Bass pro at Arundel Mills at opening might have what you're looking for.

The drive to Atlantic might be under 30 minutes, but there's no way to account for the wait to get into the shop. People sit in their cars, having signed in with the doorkeeper to call and give them the OK to enter.

Then too, there'll be a limitation on the amount you're allowed to buy, at least until the shortage disappears.

MD limits the number of folks allowed into the store, with a $15000 fine if they're caught exceeding. Unless you're Walmart, of course.

It would almost be worthwhile to arrange an appointment style admission. Maryland is just so screwed up.

Online is the answer, unless you can come up with an interesting trade with one of the "hoarders" hereabouts.

Availability is generally within 24hrs or less of the arrival of their most recent shipment .

By pre Zombie standards , all .223/ 5.56 ammo is outrageously expensive , and differs only by minor degree . Currently +/- $1 per round is the benchmark . BUT with most LGS having tight rationing ( purchase limits ) , the cumulative schlepping between LGS is bigger deal than price variations .

Every hates on Gun Shows , but at least there the serious ammo vendors don't limit quanities
. Even if the same unit price , just bite the bullet , figure out your minimum comfort level for short term stash , and buy it all at once .

My last two visits, that was a ten minute wait and then a no-minute wait. But I was in a couple months back and it was close to half an hour. Also be very tuned into the their slightly funky current pandemic shop hours. One wouldn't expect to show up at 4:30 on a weekday and find they've closed. But, it happens!

I'd jump on ammoseek.com find what you want and what your willing to pay and it comes to your door . laxammo.com is another one that are not to bad price wise .
