A few years ago my parents went to Alaska, and brought me back a Ulu knife. It’s one of those tourists types, but it works really good in the kitchen. It’s the most used knife in our kitchen.
Anyways, I thought about making my own Ulu. I would use the one I had, as a template, to make my own blade.
For about the last week I’ve been going out to the shop and playing around for a few minutes every evening. Since I don’t have a way to temper steel, I used a hammer and chisel, to cut out my blade, from an old hand saw I had laying around. I used files you get my final shape, and set my bevels. I had a piece of oak board in the shop, that I used to make the handle. Used my soft and hard Arkansas stones, and finished polishing my edge on a old barbers hone.
This thing is sharp! Used it in the kitchen the last few days, and I really like using it.
It was a fun little project, and my wife is already asking me to make a few more.
