20 minutes from the foot of the bridge there, but he'd have to factor in a little bit of a drive inside VA. From King George (the town) it's more like 40-45 minutes.

Still way better area than any part of this state.

It only takes me 25 mins from Hughesville and I’m at big dogs , 45 min I’m in Fredericksburg

No different than living in Hollywood or Lexington park the drive to the dorf would be 45/60 mins.

Yeah, that seems like a good area based on what I've seen.

Going to hold off on buying until I have spent some time in the area.

Waldorf isn't bad, but some of it is neighborhood-dependent. La Plata is generally a more countrified place with nicer neighborhoods. The whole area is changing fast though. I always tell people to look for a place in La Plata first.

For living across the Nice Bridge--the traffic isn't that bad yet unless it's a holiday weekend in the summer (in that case it can basically back up 10 miles to La Plata). Periodically the bridge will be closed, which basically shuts everything down. Otherwise, it's just slightly far to commute every day just because of the distance. I know a few people that do it, and it does get to be a little soul-sucking.

I'd look at northern St. Mary's county. As much as Virginia makes sense from a quality of life and 2A standpoint, there's no way I'd put that bridge between home and work.

Plus, we can use more like minded people in this state.

I hear you, man--and putting aside the guns laws King George County is also a very nice place--nothing like the Northern VA/DC suburbs. It is also out of reach of the DC commuters, so it's a little cheaper, and it has all the nice things that come along with Fredericksburg, like Wegman's.

Finding a place in Dahlgren would shave about 15 minutes off the commute versus King George, as well, since KG is about 8 extra miles down a windy road.

Have any of y’all sat on branch ave and 301 on a daily I’ll rake the nice bridge any day.

The whole Waldorf brandywine area is way over crowded.

All good information guys, I appreciate it.

45 minutes or less is a reasonable commute in my mind. I used to live close to Philly and am used to traffic, but would like to avoid it if possible.

I bet average commute times in the Northeast are pretty long. I know people who drive two hours one way. No I would do that though.

Looks about right. Still would be my choice.

That's a good point as well: if work is in North Waldorf, add 15-20 minutes for all of these travel times. All of those lights up there in Brandywine are brutal. Basically 301 from Brandywine to Billingsley is full of lights and is infuriating. South of that, usually clear sailing.

Even with the new bypass in brandywine it’s still crappy , I drive to northern va daily for my job. Even at 430am there is a lot of traffic.

I’ve often wondered if these people even work 8hr jobs lol

I'll be working slightly south east of Waldorf. Kind of in between La Plata and Waldorf east of 301.

In that case it’s probably worth considering renting a place in KG County to see if you can tolerate the bridge/commute. If you do it for a while and think, “yeah, I could do this drive forever”, then KG really is a much nicer place to live, even if you set aside the gun issue.

Hello all. Im a current PA resident and just accepted a job in Waldorf. I have always had reservations about moving to MD due to the restrictive gun laws, but this job is too good to pass up.

I'm heading down March 11th and am currently looking for a place to rent as I establish roots in the area. I'll probably be staying in a hotel until I find a place and move the wife down. Any suggestions on the area are very much welcome.

Although a have a few firearms, I really haven't spent much time shooting and plan on spending much more time at the range.

Look forward to being an active member of the community.

A job, in Waldorf ? I thought everyone worked in DC ;) .

Do you own any AR15 type firearms that you acquired after Oct 1st 2013 ? If yes, you have to make plans to somehow keep them out of this state.

The other option is to move to King George County VA and commute across the bridge.

I'm working in a new power plant outside town. . Not sure what kind of other jobs are in the Waldorf area. Looked like a lot of retail stuff.

I have an AR pistol. As I understand, they are not prohibited at this time.

Other then that I have a few .22 rimfires and a couple of Glocks.

As a lifelong Waldorf resident (minus a short time in a investment property in St Mary’s) moving out of there was the best decision I’ve ever made. West Moreland is about 25-30 over the bridge and it’s like another world from over there. With the cost of living and carrying around anything you want, even when sitting in traffic on the bridge on a summer Friday, I just smile and think about Ak’s and FAL’s and Galil’s and Uzi’s and.....

There isn't much else. The good news is, if you work at the new plant, you dont really ever have to deal with Waldorf traffic. If schools are not a concern, there are lots of reasonably priced options for real estate.
    - I would stay out of Waldof/St Charles itself. Lots of shitty neighborhoods and many of the better ones are on the decline.
    - You could live in St Marys and have a fairly short commute. SMC is still more 'country' than any of the other counties in the area. If you stay away from the water, lots of reasonably priced real estate.
    - In Charles, you have a pretty direct shot to the plant from anywhere west and south. La Plata, the 'west county', the area down towards St Marys like Dentsville and Hughesville. Downside of chuck-co are the brutal school taxes, but hey we have a ****ing Planetarium in a high-school !
    - As mentioned, the Dahlgren area of King George County VA would be a doable commute.

I don't know how AR pistols are treated under the irrational and insane laws of this state.

In Southern Maryland, northern St. Marys or Calvert. I would not ever, ever buy in Charles again. Owned a home in the best neighborhood in Charles, thankfully sold when the prices went insane. Charles county is now Prince Georges County extended, a cess pool. Look at property taxes and crime rate, duplicate of Prince Georges. I would definetly look at living in Va if possible, but they get you hard on personal property taxes if you have a boat or rv. Good luck with your new job. I assume it is at the new natural gas fired turbine power plant near the landfill.
