I agree about the problems with bugging out... my bug out plan is really a get home plan. I have two homes that can sustain my family for the long haul (one is a little more defensible than the other... but can make due in either location)... if stuff hits the oscillating room cooling device I am going to get home to wherever is closer (or wherever the rest of the family is) and make the best of what I have at that location.

I started reading that, and said "I have too much work to do, I'll stop at bullet point 2." Nope. I ended up reading all of it. That really is the reality of it, and most people do not understand it.

Thanks for posting that. Now, I really need to get back to work.

Bisley, that was directed at you. I still have the e-mail notification and I am going to let my wife and siblings read it. Thanks again.

Where did he get that write-up from? I went to respond to it and it was gone.

How long would it take me to break 5 different ejectors? I'm thinking we would all be dead or the zombie threat would be contained by that point. In my opinion having just one of anything firearm related is misguided. Strength in quantity. As long as that quantity is also reliable. Hence the AK and Glock selections. I do like the variation in opinions this thread is generating.

Hard to say. All depends on who built the rifle and how well the heat treating was done, rate of fire also comes into play. A poorly heat treated ejector will work for a while, if you're not dumping mag after mag thru the gun in a short period. Start dumping mags, and a poorly treated ejector WILL fail.

Reliability can also suffer depending on who built the rifle. How many people have had to modify mags, or their host AK, to ensure mags fit/feed/release as they should??

Hell, I'll use whatever is at hand if need be - I'll have 0 fvcks to give if shit goes wrong and it comes to putting rounds downrange to save my ass.

I'm not saying I'd turn my nose up at an AK, but in THIS country, I'd go for an AR first - and hoard any and every firearm I can as a backup.

    SHTF rifle?

If I am in home defending outwards, my AR probably. If I am out, but relatively close by, my Vepr 308. If I am bugging out for a long trek, my paratrooper SKS. YMMV

Man, I was hoping to see more pictures. If SHTF, I would bug IN therefore would have access to all my firearms. Having said that, the following firearms would be on hand:

If it comes to it. I would try to grab a combination of these. Of the firearms that I own, I have found these to be most reliable. My idea is to stick to a variety of the more common ammunition types.

    12 gauge, .308, 5.56, and 9mm

    Top Benelli M3 Super 90
    Next Springfield SOCOM II
    Left Sig Sauer P556
    Middle Sig Sauer 516 pistol
    Handgun Sig Sauer P229
Right Omega OM9 FS (MP-5 clone)

I really wonder how many people, in a time of crisis, will actually be able to "bug out"? If you live anywhere near the cities, forget it. Getting out of Baltimore City from Fayette Street on 9/11 was impossible and I wasn't that far from I-95. Trying to make a phone call was impossible too. It took forever to get through to my mom. Then, if you cannot go anywhere in a vehicle anytime soon, how many people are really in shape to run 10+ miles with a bugout bag and guns strapped to themselves. My brothers, sisters, and parents all have a plan. Come to fabs' house where there is plenty of food, water, ammo, firewood, etc. From here, we figure things out based upon the circumstances.

Even if you have a bicycle, which I have a few of, what are the chances of going anywhere on it in a traffic jam without getting shot because some idiot thinks he is the only one in the crowd with a gun and he wants the bike for himself? Reminds me of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise.

I really do think the first thing to do is to hunker down. After a couple of weeks of that, see where things are, and come up with a plan based upon the circumstances. People that are fixated on bugging out have seen Red Dawn once too many times.

Yeah I know about a third of my neighbors really well and casual acquaintances with another third. At a guess of the 30 I do know well, 20-25 of them are gun owners. If I had to take a guess the ratio is probably similar for the other 60-70 families. Big neighborhood, but I'd imagine we could put up a decent fight for it.

Under most vaguely realistic scenarios where I can see a major break down of law and order occurring I'd want to bug-in under almost all of them. Massive tidal wave (canary island eruption) might be one of the few were I'd want to hit the road.

My SHTF rifle would be my AR. Plenty of ammo on hand and readily available. Topped with a Primary Arms 5x Prism paired with a micro red dot sight.

Because the cartridge it shoots sucks and doesn't penetrate

Plus where are you gonna find that in SHTF?

Well if you own 1 you should have the ammo for it. Would suck owning any gun and not have a decent amount for it. I believe the ss192 does a decent job of going through body armor. It is pricey. But once again you gto the gun you should have the ammo.
