M1A's suck. Buy an AR-10 or a SCAR. You can also purchase an AK style rifle in .308 such as the VEPR.

You have obviously never owned a real match grade M1A, like those built by the RTE shop at Quantico or by one of the top armorers like Charlie Maloney!

Have to agree here. There is a reason designated marksmen are STILL using M1A's in combat.

That's because after the M14 was discovered to be a crap rifle and they shoved them in storage to be replaced my the M16 they found in Afghanistan that they needed a .308 caliber rifle to reach longer distances. So they dusted off the worthless M14's, spent about 1k upgrading and accurizing them and reissued them. If they where such "wunderguns" they wouldn't have needed to upgrade them.

Nevermind the fact that in unbiased testing by the Army both the AK and the M16 where found to be better rifles and the M14 was left in the dust.

    I have a Super Match M1A. It doesn't suck.

I have a standard M1a and it doesn't suck. It is a lot of fun to shoot. It is a great rifle for what it is. It is as accurate as my standard AR-15 carbine. The AR vs. M1a debate is as old as the AK vs AR debate. There isn't any point in having it. Both have had their purpose. But don't let me get in the way of a good internet fight... FINISH HIM!!!! AK SBR's are hard to do legally unless it is a pre-ban rifle, AK pistols do not meet the definition of a rifle and thus not a copy.

Want to bald an M1A SBR, use a pre-ban rifle and keep it over 29", want to build an M1A pistol, feel free to, want to build a M1A rifle, use a pre-ban receiver.

Same rules as for an AR-15, apply to the M1A and any other rifle on the (now) banned list)

You can build an AK pistol into an AK SBR.

Why use a pre-ban M1A to build an SBR?

And as active duty military, yes, you can purchase it in any state that will permit you to, and store it out of state. But, you cannot bring it into MD to enjoy it while you are stationed here.

    Sort of.

He can buy it in another state, if it is legal in his state of residence.

But you are correct, he may not bring it into MD.

From a legal standing, it makes sense. But they have a list that names specific weapons. The list on the website lists Norinco and Polytech as "NOT BANNED" which means they're surely aware of these rifles. Common sense would say "ban the obvious Chinese copies" as well.

The law was not written that way. And it is so poorly written, that a lot of things like this occur.

The Polytech is not banned, as some of the parts are metric threaded. And also, IIRC, a USGI bolt will not work in a stock Polytech receiver.

If your home of record is outside Merryland, you can own a M1A. Send me a mail and I'll go over some details with you. The M1A is one rifle that mistakingly got included on Md's shit list and it's a ban doesn't make any sense. No reason why you can't have one and enjoy shooting it.

I toted the M14 in Ranger school and had them in my first unit in Korea in '64. Great weapon and much preferred over the lightweight POS M16 they issued to the troops in the 60s. Got a hell of a lot of good men killed in Vietnam with that one till they got things figured out.

Again, maybe, as long it is not banned in his state of residency. So most likely he can buy one.

But he cannot bring it into MD. So best is, if he wants an M1A, to wait until his next duty station, and buy it then.

Read the book called The Black Rifle: M16 Retrospective, it tells all about the history of the adoption of the AR. A program called SCHV (small caliber high velocity) was found to be more combat effective for hits on target. More bullets less weight. The M14 was built off the Garand which was the greatest fighting implement of all time. There were some politics involved in there as well. It's a great read, check it out. I love my M1A, super accurate and has never jammed.

Most people who love the M14 are actually in love with the concept of a semiauto 7.62x51 ( or more broadly, a semiauto in a full power battle rifle ctg). The M14 just happened to be the semiauto-ish full power battle rifle in the US inventory, not necessarily an excellent rifle compared to the universe of full powered autoloading battle rifles.

Yeah, it only two 3 tries to make it almost as good as the FN FAL.

If I could only have one rifle, I think the FN FAL would be, if not the top, real close to the top.
