Thinking about getting one of these for my 18" barrel carbine. Comments? Good? Bad? Ugly?

I have one. It is a little wiggly but it sure makes the rifle compact.

Pretty comfortable to shoot as well.

I picked mine up used to $60, so I definately feel it was worth it.

I have the Choate. It locks up very solid.

The Israelis fitted up a bunch of M1 Carbines with the Choate stocks and passed them out to schoolteachers, kibbutz guards, and such.

If you are planning to cut it to run on your Charger SBR, how would you seat/attach the barrel in the Butler Creek?

I believe they are designed for use with the metal strap on a 10/22 barrel.

If that wasn't your plan, what are you using for a handguard/forend to attach a charger barrel?

Last note, have you considered a Rhineland -

I am working on a similar project so I am excited to see what works for you.

Oh my god, you just made my whole god damned week!!!

That is awesome. I've been looking for a wood side folder. Basically the butler creek, but with wood action/forearm in wood. A little sad it means basically having to buy TWO stocks to assemble the one I want, but I imagine I'll figure out a way to deal. I wonder how well you could assemble it without the barrel band. Any ideas on that? How does one normally mount a 10/22 without the band and how snug is it?

The Ramline/factory folding unicorns are another wood-side folding option but you'll pay for a half dozen 10/22s to get one.

I am interested if anyone with 10/22 experience can answer band/barrel question.

I also made an assumption about dreadpriate's use for the Butler Creek but a takedown, folding SBR is a slick package.

I don't think the barrel band on a 10/22 actually does anything, except maybe mess up the harmonics.

    By the way,
Here's a detail of the Choate on my 10/22

Highli99 mentioned a 22 Charger - but no, this would be for my 10/22 carbine with 18" barrel. I already have plans for the 22 Charger after the Form 1 is approved.

Question on legality, I know with MD's new laws, the feature restriction doesn't apply to rimfires, does that include overall length? Or does it matter as it is measured with stock in nominal firing position even if you can shoot with the stock folded? Just wondering since I'd think with a folding stock you'd be down to something like 26-28" with it folded which is under the 29" minimum. And worse if you have a 16" barrel on there.

I don't believe a rimfire rifle (SBR or o/w) has to be greater than 29" OAL. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in. [EDIT - I think an 18" barrel would be >29" however].

When I looked it up it lists the overall length as 38" and I assume a folding stock would chop 10-11" off when folded.

My father in law has one on a 1022. It rattles, bends, and generally feels cheap... but it works every time, and makes a small rifle for transport. I'd buy one for that reason.

I don't think it applies to rimfires, but in any case, OAL is measured with stock fully extended.

The M1 Carbine is still legal with a folding stock, as long as it doesn't have a flash hider or grenade launcher installed.

My Choate folder is very solid: no shake, no rattle, no rock and roll.

I have one for a SBR project(waiting on stamp). They are not light weight. The do have a very solid lock up in both positions. The mold seam can be sharp, may require some sanding or trimming. I find that it is a great product overall.

There is a thread in the NFA section that addresses sub 29" rimfire SBR's. SB-281 does not apply. It gives the advised description that BATFE accepts when designating that the build is rimfire and not subject to the 29" law.
