With all of the evil going down these days, I am considering putting a pump in the trunk. The pump would be in a soft case, no lock (zipper). Ammo would be in the side pocket of the soft case (pump not loaded).

From what I have read, through MD's confusing-as-hell laws, I think I am good to go. Any comments from the experts?

Does the ammo have to be in a different case?

What happens if I get stopped by the cops? Do I tell them or just shut up?

Just to be clear, I want to be 100% legal in every respect.

PS: I hate the fact that as a common citizen I will never be approved for CC.

    Thanks,
    Winch

Legality of it will not prevent you from being arrested and charged in certain areas of this state and by certain officers.

    He's just funnin' ya.

You are free to transport an unloaded long gun--just be aware of straying into DC or school driveways etc

Yeah. This. Not technically illegal. Doesn't mean you won't get seriously hassled if you encounter the wrong cop.

It's legal if not loaded, meaning an empty chamber AND Magazine tube. But how would anyone know it's in the trunk?

keep your mouth closed. don't consent to a search

My truck doesn't have a trunk and the lot I park in for my commute has had recent issues with break-ins. So my carry piece stays home until I get back from work. I really hate working in DC.

As we all know from experience, opinions are only worth the paper on which they are written, and much of that depends on the source of the information. I recently asked two LEOs about the legality of keeping a long gun in the trunk, padlocked to the car's frame, and both were adamant that it was illegal. I've also heard from LGSs and other LEOs that it IS legal. My sincere recommendation is to find a knowledgeable lawyer and follow his written advice. Or as another poster said, don't ask, don't tell. Or, perhaps one of our google-fu experts can post links to ALL the applicable laws and court cases that apply (just kidding...of course).

I suspect that 99.99% of the time an individual could have anything in his or her trunk with no negative consequences. But all it would take is one accident that required the car to be towed, and the resulting inventory (required when a car is towed to a lot) would be documented proof of what was in the car. I discovered that little bit of info when my car was towed to a lot after an accident. I had a case of ammo in the trunk (perfectly legal), and the lot manager pulled out the inventory sheet and had me sign off that I was taking one of the items. Then he complimented me for buying in bulk. High fives all around. :D

If your LE friends tell you it's illegal, please ask them for a cite of the statute. The only statute is in the DNR regs and all it prohibits is loaded long guns IN or ON a vehicle. Unloaded not prohibited therefor legal

    I'll find the statute

I have a cop in my family who thinks that the folding knife I carry is illegal.

No disrespect to our LEO's but some are not well versed in the minutiae of the gun statutes.

same thing applies to some gun store employees

A rifle, even locked in the trunk, sure beats the one you have at home. If this is legal I have a Nagant that will be repurposed in short order.
