It wasn't out yet when we spoke at your club.

I figured as much. These slippary bastards are trying to push one through on us. Perhaps the rifle ban case being remanded for strict scrutiny has them teeing up so that people can't just sell scary rifles to each other when everything is legal again.

So what is the battle plan for this?

It is time to get the word out to the hunters, occasional shooters, and those who are not as committed as we are. Here is the text of an an email I just sent and I realize it is a bit over the top but no more than the rhetoric the anti's use. Feel free to copy any or all of it for your own use. Start the phones ringing early and often in Annapolis especially from people they don't usually hear from.

    Subject
Proposed Ban On Sale Of Rifles And Shotguns In Maryland

A new law has been proposed in the Maryland General assembly to ban the private sale or transfer (Gift) of rifles and shotguns in the state of Maryland without going through a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer and paying as yet unspecified fees for the transfer and background checks with the added delays and waiting periods. This means you will not be able to buy or sell even a .22 rifle or a shotgun to your hunting buddy, neighbor, cousin, or brother in law. You also will not be able to give your family members a gun for Christmas or give your grandchildren their first gun.

Here is a link to the Maryland General Assembly web page for SB0947:
    http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frmMain.aspx?pid=billpage&tab=subject3&id=sb0947&stab=01&ys=2016RS

Call and write the politicians that represent you and tell them you will remember their vote on this at the next election. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors about this infringement on your civil rights.

IMHO, this is a must veto for Hogan. If he does not veto it, he will loose much of the voting base that put him in office. That is a win for the democrats! It would surely mean another gun grabbing democrat in the governor's mansion come next election. The democrats would be able to pass anything they want if that should happen. If Hogan veto's it, he shows that he has the balls to stand up to the democrats when necessary. A veto would finally force the democrats who support this kind of legislation out into the public eye and reveal them for what they are. It will cost them votes in the next election.

A veto will force the Democrats to vote twice for restricting rights, once to pass it and a second time to override a veto. Makes it hard for them to claim it was a mistake.

Enforcement may not be on their minds. We are a law abiding community. Many of us have careers that would be ruined with a firearms offense conviction on our record. This would probably be treated similar to a secondary offense. Get stopped or caught doi g something and you are found in.possession of a long gun with no evidence of legal transfers retained on file, and an additional charge is tacked on, which would disqualify you from owning guns ever again.

Do you all realize that Maryland is 2:1, D:R?? I completely agree that this is veto bait. If he vetoes, he is against "common sense" safety measures. This will be played over and over during the next cycle. Rome was not built in a day. They (MGA) are trying to trap him. Look, we have a Republican governor. An amazing achievement for this State. If you all believe that he must appease his voting base for being strongly PRO 2A, he will LOOSE the next election. Guaranteed. What do we do? Show up in NUMBERS, talk to the MGA, DONATE. This all about incremental changes. Let us try the same strategy.

How is this veto bait? I don't even know what that means. Are you saying this will hurt Hogan politically if he vetoes it and then it goes on to an override of the veto? If so, I just really don't think being pro-gun is going to hurt Hogan politically now or for re-election. It is a small issue. Forcing the override forces more people to publicly support it, which WILL hurt 3/5 of the assembly politically. Not many (any?) people ever lost an election for being pro-gun, that can't be said for the opposite.

    I agree with this 100%

This, and the fact that the shotgun guys (coloquially fudds) should be up in arms about this means this is just more political grandstanding at the end of the day.

Guys you need to stop being so ready to throw in the towel on this one. Getting bills passed, especially gun control, is not nearly as easy as our MoCo tyrants would like you to think it is. Frosh and O'Malley both had to use tremendous amounts of political capital to get FSA2013 passed, and even then they didn't get nearly the ban they wanted. (I won't say what parts so as not to give the gun control fat ladies who troll here ideas. Hi girls.

This bill can be probably be killed in committee with a concerted effort. Which is the place to do it. Once it makes the floor the dembots will pass it. Even then Hogan might still have enough support to sustain a veto, IF he chooses to use it. Which I only give about 60-40 odds in our favor he would.

    Just my .02.

Well said sir. I will be calling Justin Ready's office as he now sits on the Judiciary Committee.

I believe this is the Senate version of HB0692.

If any of our more experienced lobbying letter drafters can come up with some sample language for sending out to our elected weasels about this, simple brains like mine would like to send some faxes and emails.

I don't have time or the knowledge of dissecting these things to go pull out how the draft would violate precedent or the Constitution, or other such points, but if we can get some of those that folks can use in writing their own letters, that would be a huge help!

    Just sayin...

This bill targets "hunters" and "sportsmen", something the legislature was afraid to do in 2013.

It's also step 1 in making all firearms regulated (77r/7 day wait), which is a plan they have been floating since 2013.

Hearings are march 9th and 15th be there!

This is like a poll tax. The cost of fees to transfer rifles will hurt the poor the most. Think of the fees to tx a collection from parent to kids if each transfer has to be performed at an ffl.

We've made that argument before. They don't care.

The best way is to defeat it before it gets out, just like any other anti's bill. If it does get out, Hogan has nothing to loose by vetoing it. Democrats own hunting rifles and shotguns too! The democrats will end up "shooting themselves in the foot" with this one due to their long standing argument that they are not trying to infringe upon the rights of hunters. If this does manage to get out and the democrats pass it, they will alienate the part of their voting base, that sat home on election day, because they were only passing "common sense" gun control laws. If Hogan fails to veto, the democrats will play like he supported a law that impacted hunters. Hogan would also loose a large amount of support from the 2A community that helped put him in office. The other side has been winning for years by incremental infringements. Allowing another incremental infringement would be another loss. I believe it is very possible that the democrats could hang themselves with this one!
