That's a damn good price! I have a Geissele for my AR-15's, but when it came to the 308s, I went with the Brownell version, which is nice (and half the price of the "G"), but I need to mill a couple of vice flats on it so I can use it like a Geissele, not the way Brownells intended.

I've never ordered from Botach before but had heard bad things about them.

I for one can not complain. I got my reaction rod today. I placed the order on the 5th of April.

I was surprised. I really had heard terrible things about Botach but this was as easy as a transaction as I'd ever had.

Botach hasn't done me wrong, Yet.

Got a Aimpoint 3x magnifier with twist-mount from them a few years ago for a hell of a price.

Ok, as a newish AR owner what is this used for?

It replaces vise blocks, which is normally what you'd use to secure the upper in a vise for a variety of jobs - muzzle-brakes, doing/undoing barrel nut for whatever reason, etc.

The rod engages the barrel extension itself, keeping the torque load from shearing off the barrel index pin in the barrel extension.

Will have to check these out. It figures one pops up just after a bought a Magpul Bev Block.

One of these fake Geissele rods or a Magpul BEV block?

I've never used a reaction rod (Geissele or knockoff) so I can't offer a comparison. I do own a BEV block though, and I'm a fan. I've used the clamshell upper vise blocks, as well as the 2-piece no-mar style jaws, and I'll never go back to either after using the BEV block. I would especially recommend it to anyone who is buying tools for their first AR build, as the BEV can be flipped over and used as a lower block as well.

I have a Brownells tool, but it's too short to mill flats into...could use some 1/2" bar stock in the 1/2" end of the tool to secure it into the vice, but just a socket's worth depth of 1/2" rod holding a whole upper at the end of a vice scares me. I own a separate lower mag block, but it's not the best.

The deal with Botach is that they may or may not ever ship your stuff and they won't tell you if they are or aren't going to. That being said, if you call and cancel the order they, refund your money no questions asked. FWIW, I'll order from Botach, but PSA is dead to me.

I don't use the reaction rod for installing barrels. I use it solely to install muzzle devices, dust covers, sights, and forward assists as it allows easy rotation of the upper.

I have seen the reaction rod still damage the barrel index pin when installing and removing barrels. Geissele even modified the RR to try and eliminate the issue. Most guys

In my opinion a modified Bev Block (Bottom Chopped Off) or a Modified Daves Metal Works Upper Lathe Rod, used in conjunction with a Clamshell is the best way to install a Barrel Because they lock everything together. This is not an off the shelf option though. Otherwise the traditional Clamshell Insert and Clamshell still my second choice for a barrel install. If you use a torque wrench you will never damage the index pin, but ilyou can still get FSB clocking due to the torque applied. Lots of 33MS grease will help minimize this but it won't always work.

Windham Weaponry developed a special tool to install barrels to prevent FSB clocking but their fabricator will not make them for the general public. it's basically a mixture of the BEV block and a reaction rod with a barrel nut alignment rod.
