Another question might be: "how many applications were sponsored by armored car companies and what are the restrictions on them outside of work?" Also: "how many were sponsored by private security companies and what are their restrictions?"

I'm just guessing here but MSP is most likely using those statistics to fudge their numbers.

For the record, I have not applied for a Maryland CCW.

This is what MSI has on their website. Occupations are broken down pretty well (example: Security guards and police)

    Wait, 2,661 "Others"?

That's just shy of 1,000 more than every other category (beside all the "police" and special folks) listed.

Wonder what the "others" consist of? Can't all be struggling male models like myself could they?

Anyone can ask for information, but you are likely to be denied. Chances are better if you ask your state senator or delegate to inquire on your behalf, but the MSP might still stymie any such request out of loyalty to the prior administration, embarrassment, or out of habit.

Requests under Maryland's Public Information Act must be for documents. Documents containing "x", all documents "from or to x", and you must often pay the costs of acquiring and copying.

I was thinking about this again this weekend. I am willing to do a PIA. I just need to know specifically what to ask for:

    1. Current Permit Holders By Occupation (including race, sex?)
    2. How many applications were there in 2014?
    3. How many of those that applied in 2014 were declined?
    4. Of those declined, how many appealed?
    5. Of those that appealed, how many received a permit?
    6. How many people applied for renewal of their permit in 2014?
    7. Of those that applied for renewal, how many were declined?
    8. How many permits were issued without a fee?

Let me know if I missed anything.

I received a call from the MSP this afternoon regarding my March 4, 2015 PIA request for the above questions. The call went well and I received an emailed letter with the breakdown of the questions and what information they have and can get. There is a cost to some of the questions depending on how current/detailed I want the answers (may be waived all together). There is a per page cost as well (5 pages are what they are estimating). All costs are allowed per COMAR 29.01.02.13 (F).

To get the answer to #4, I have to file a PIA with the Handgun Permit Review Board within the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS).

I am inclined to ask for the most recent info and most detailed info for #7 (will be an hourly charge to get this - estimate of 1 hour)

Email or write your delegate, with whom you have a good relationship, and ask them to request it on your behalf.

Or, ask MSI to coordinate and submit a comprehensive information request.

There are few exemptions for public interest organizations and legislative reps are provided requested info as part of their oversight responsibilities.
