Going to NY this weekend and apparently any "gravity" knife that locks open is illegal to carry. Their laws are not very clear. So does anyone know of any shops that carry some alternative. Thanks.

Don't you need a nice stout cane to help you get around?

I've made a couple gentleman's canes, one with polished brass cap and one with shiny steel cap, out of desert ironwood that are both weighty and hard enough to support a big man or fold one in half. I sometimes walk with the assistance of one when in Baltimore.

I wasn't aware of any law that prohibited folding pen knives so that's what I had in my pocket this past Fall when visiting Manhattan. A gravity knife is one that deploys stiletto-like with either a flick of the wrist or force of gravity and locks open. I have an OSS replica gravity knife but it rarely leaves the safe and carrying it would be risky to one's freedom, 2A and otherwise(so I don't).

All my folding knives have a lock when opened which is illegal there. My fixed blades are more than 4". Any decent knife shops in the Harford county area?

Maryland Quarter Master in Bel Air always seems to have some nice knives.

A heavy duty pen if you really do not want to be caught with a knife. Or one of those Kubotans. I know S&W makes nice affordable machined aluminum ones.

No law against carrying either a stainless steel retractable pen ($10 at Staples) or a flashlight.

More and more I just carry my Surefire in my front pants pocket.

Mostly for pragmatic purposes but also because it has other applications if needed. I honestly feel like I would be more likely to use a striking weapon than I would a knife in the very unlikely scenario that I'd have to be in that position, but that's just me.

I was just in Manhattan before Christmas and ran into the same situation. Carried my Preon pen light in place of my EDC knife, figured a bright light was better than nothing at all.

My buddy was in med school up there for a couple years and one of his friends got stopped by a couple police about his knife when he came to visit. I think he got a pretty big ticket and had it confiscated.

I'd recheck that knife law. Locking blades are not gravity knives. Check blade length law too.

Edit: im wrong, you are right. Their knife laws suck.

    We'll use sex-ed rules for a second....ahem....
...apparently "someone I know" has broken the knife laws every time they have ever been in NYC, ever. They always follow gibbs rule 9 and have had locking knives on them since they were 10 years old. Interesting to learn.

I'd go for a striking implement. Someone mentioned a cane. That's a very effective weapon and can give you some distance from an attacker. Another one i'd suggest is an umbrella. You'll blend in almost everywhere with one and the metal spike on the end and hook handled ones can be a pretty great weapon.

888 or Boker Folding Cop Tool. Never know when you have to cut a seat belt. That's the 888 version.

To get around the locking blade BS. The Boker Fixed Blade CTonly has a 1 3/4" blade.

I got my disabled wife a cane--it's called a 'Zap Cane'. Great defensive tool, probably illegal in NYC but I wouldn't have her there without it......
