I have been wondering what everyone else is using to safely unload your firearms at home when they are loaded. I have been pointing my pistols at the end a fully packed bookcase knowing the round will not pass thru 6 feet of paper but there has to be a better/safer way. Don't laugh too hard but on a recent episode of Homeland I saw they were using a steel drum probably filled with sand.

Point gun to the ground in the yard, and unload.

Dirt is a lot cheaper to replace, than some expensive furniture

If inside, consider popping in some ear plugs first. Would suck to have an AD and end up deaf.

I live in a townhome community so the backyard is not an option. My question is not how to unload but what do you use as a safe backstop in case you have one of those awwww crap moments.

Is this something you would do on a daily basis, or only once in awhile?

The reason I am asking is that rechambering a round over and over can cause damage to the casing, as well as causing the projectile to set back in to the case, and cause increased pressure if fired.

If it's daily you might be safer leaving the gun in the holster, and placing the entire thing in a secured gun safe. If it is only every now and then, I remember seeing directions on line for making one using a 5-20 gallon barrel, sand, and some thin rubber sheets to minimize sand blowback.

A 5 gallon bucket and a 50# bag of sand. About $7 at your favorite home improvement store.

Or just fire off the chambered round at some object you don't like in your house. You don't want to reuse it anyway as it's been slammed already.:)

I have honestly never given this question much thought. I usually just drop the mag, keep finger outside for trigger and rack it. I never considered a ND, since I place a premium on safety at all times.
