At this moment? I'd snap up a P1, a Star B, and a Cz-82. The P64 I'm less fond of, I think the double action is a PITA.

Then figure out what you are interested in. First World War? World War 2? A specific maker?

And keep close track of serial numbers! Anything 50 years old is C&R, which puts the cutoff date as 1964...and I'd bet if you paid in advance, a seller would be happy to hold a 1965-vintage gun two months. That opens up a lot of postwar guns.

What about a TT-C? Everyone should have a Romanian, Yugo, and Polish Tok.

Agree on the Star B. I love that pistol.

For some reason, CZ82 just doesn't do it for me.

    I would love a P38.

I don't think anyone mentioned 1951 Beretta 9mm? A great gun, in your price range--Egyptian Helwan is a copy and also an option.

Seller sent to FFL03 in both cases. They simply did not know it was C&R when they listed it, so I had my friends point out the markings on the frames which made them C&R.

As I understand it, all '63 and earlier HP's have internal extractors. If the numbers match, that should be all you need to go by. Here is a German occupation HP on GB (asking $14, probably worth $8 or $9):

Coles has a later C&R HP on GB right now: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=451768071 $500

These had external extractors because they were rebuilt and received newer slides, but they were on older frames.

FN switched to external extractors some time in 1962. Then in 1964 they went to T prefix serial numbers and relocated the proof marks from the left side above the trigger to the right side on the top of the trigger guard.

Browning marked FN Hi Powers were numbered with FN Hi Powers, so this info is good for FN Hi Powers too.

Yep, but he specifically wanted something that ate cheap and easily-available ammo. That's becoming more true, again, with Toks, but we aren't there yet.

Agree on the Star B. I love that pistol.

Once you get it sorted out (steel-cased cheapo ammo) nearly everyone does. I like all of mine.

For some reason, CZ82 just doesn't do it for me.

I don't understand this. We agree on most things, and that's one of my favorites of all time.

    I would love a P38.

When I find two that are good buys, I'll let you know about the second one.

Don't know. I tend to like things that look like they are older than me. The CZ82 looks like a Ford LTD from the 70s - kind of streamlined and kind of shiny, but you know it's kind of ergonomically wack. I know that people who have them absolutely love them. Maybe I just need to shoot one. Interestingly, I do love the look of the P64 but I know people say it's no fun to shoot.

The bottom line is that guns are like (not mass-produced) beer. I have yet to find one I don't like to shoot. Limited space, limited funds, need to keep the Minister of Sex and Finance off my case, etc.

I LMAO and then put in a verbal request to CINCHOUSE to start calling her "Minister of Sex and Finance." She said no of course. I thought it had a nice socialist ring to it.

I love the CZ-82 the most have 2, the Tokarev is a fun shooter, the P1/with P38 Slide is the most accurate, a Star B 9mm is next on my C&R buy list. If I had the money I would have a Nagent just because I what one. When I buy a firearm It because I intend to shoot it ! :)

I'd love to find a C&R Hi Power for $400 or less, but it seems like they are always in the $600 range

Look up cdisales on Gunbroker and find their FN HPs....many are a bit more than $400 but some aren't (varying from $349 - $469, come with a 10 round clip (can ship to MD). You can acquire the std cap mags later.

I check cdisales every day. Compared to the one I got from him sometime ago for $265, all he has now is junk. The $400+ guns are much worse than mine, the $349 guns are as freckled as a redheaded stepchild.

Never saw him sell a C&R for less than $600; never saw him miss a description. He knows them well.
