I threw a cheap scope onto an old .22 and went to the range. Two hours felw by. Now I understand why so many of you guys spend so much time...and money...punching holes in paper at long distances.

I love my pistols, but this was a completely different ballgame. Slow, precise, relaxing. It's like golf except....fun :).

I still love my pistols, but they are about self defense in my tiny little mind. With a pistol, I am all about aquiring the target and being consistant in center mass. With the rifle, it was all about dialing it in, breath control, trigger pull, and judgement.

Very cool. I think I found my next addiction but I am going to spend a lot of time perfecting technique on the .22.

And yes, Smores, it is dead nutz accurate out to 50yds with a scope (I am not though lol). I'll try some longer distances later.

50 yards is a good distance for an accurate .22 using match ammo.

I'm a paper puncher too. Below is one of my recent targets using Wolf Match Target ammo @ 50 yds.

    Show off :). Nice groupings!

This was my first time with a scope. I did receive a "respectable" from the RO, but my groups were not that tight by any stretch. I was using some really hot .22 ammo (makes the Skeeter feel like a real pistol when it feeds) but I don't think it was that accurate. Have to try some match grade stuff next time.

The scope is a totally different animal. Learning by trial and error (my preferred method), attaining the proper eye relief every time was a challenge. The zero process probably took more than a half hour because, again, I wanted to learn by myself....and the scope was WAY off at the beginning.

If I get to where I can shoot 3" groups at 100yds with this set up, I will be thrilled. The rifle is accurate as can be. When I had a flyer, I always knew why and it was always me except in one circumstance.

I really think my near 40 year old eyes are a hindrance. With a 40mm scope 100 yds was too distant for me to try first time around. I can almost see the bull at that distance lol.

It is a "mind clearing" excersize though. When you are sitting behind the scope, nothing else enters your mind. The work week goes away along with all the other day to day stuff. I actually thanked my new wife for not bitching when I got home because I was gone for a few hours. It was almost cathartic.

But, hell, it gave her time to go tanning AND do the buns of steele tape so why would she bitch? lol.

Brother I"m with you. I started using scope with my rifles for the first time this month. Totally different animal and its frustrating when I don't get it. Sometimes I like going back to my iron sights that i trust but I'm learning too

I love precision shooting, its like taking a Valium that takes a week to wear off. I'm with you splitter, the handguns are fun but precision shooting is just plain relaxing.

I watched a gentleman at Continental shooting in the prone position slow and deliberate it seemed very calming. I was thinking about either modding my sons 10/22 or building one of my own. nice looking groups

My favorite site for rimfire information and precision shooting is Rimfire Central.
    http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php

Scroll down to the SuperStock Bolt (SS/B), and SuperStock Autoloader (SS/A) areas and check out the online shooting games. The rules go from simple to complex, and getting added to 'the list' is no simple task. Many of the games are set at 25 yards, but some (like the 13mm game) are set at 50 yards.

SuperStock is for 'stock appearing' rifles... a rule which is fiercely enforced. Outside, these rifles look like any other sporter, but inside they can be as modified and detailed as your wallet can afford. The groups that some of these guys shoot make mine look poor by comparison, but I too enjoy the challange and the calming feeling of a day of precision shooting.

You will see that there are forums on RFC for the 'ultimates', 'tactical', and a whole section for rimfire pistols and rifles by brand. If benchrest rifle or match pistol is your interest, there is a section for that too. Whatever your rimfire interest, RFC probably has an area that would interest you.

With ammo prices (and availability) being what they are, I've been shooting a lot more .22 rimfire than .223 centerfire these days. ;)

I know man, I can't wait to get the scope on my 91/30 I'll feel all badass when I put the crosshairs on something. I'll probably end up talking to myself like "Target acquired, take the shot." then I'll go "One shot, one kill"
    Yea...

Its a lot of fun to play around at 200-300 yards with a 22, it kinda simulates the drop and windage of long distance centerfire shooting, and can provide a good learning experience and a challenge. If you use a 4X scope and shoot a 22 at 300 yards, then shoot a 12X scoped centerfire at 800, it feels remarkably similar, and you really get a feel for holding over/under/left/right, and how much windage to use. With a good scope, you can practice dialing it in, where you keep a chart for what adjustments are needed from 50-300 yards to shoot dead on, or with a mil-dot scope how much hold uver to use, then try to shoot at different distances, and see how close you can get to the bull on the 1st shot, it will make anyone a better shooter.

Agreed completely. Love shooting the handguns, but something about practicing with the 22lr and moving up to the 308 that is relaxing and fun. It's one of the few things in my life that maintains my full focus and closes out all other things around me...

Can't wait to get this friggin cast off my arm and go shooting :thumbsup:

Will a 22lr go out to 300 yrds effectively?

If you 0 it at 100, most ammo takes about 15 MOA up to hit at 200, and about 30MOA to hit at 300. Out at 300 yards, the bullet doesn't have enough velocity to make it through a 2X4, also some scopes won't adjust that far, and I don't know of anyone that makes angles bases for 22s, so sometimes you run out of elevation, and then have to hold over also, at 300 yards the bullet is dropping somewhere around 12ft.

I bought a 10/22, tricked it out, and also am now totally addicted. It's absolutely amazing how accurate that rifle can be once you've done some work to it.

If you think that's addictive, don't ever go to a F Class long range match talked about on these boards. You'll spend the next three months and a lot of $$$$ outfitting a 1000m rifle. :innocent0

Hint: The glass is the killer...
