Considering the birth rate for elephants is a calf every 2.5-9 years, they're not exactly a "ranchable" animal.

Is that natural birth rate or does that take into account modern methods? I don't see a lot of race horses doing it the old fashion way... If there is money to be made, someone will figure it out! Like I said, I don't know a lot about the subject but it just seems likes there has to be a better way for me to get some nice Ivory SAA grips and some seriously poor people make some money from them without wiping out the elephants.

Well, that's aside from the gestation period being 22 months or so. It's not like you can bang out baby elephants like you can baby rabbits.

Also, elephants are actually very hard on the environment--they eat a shit ton of food/forage. You'd need a giant "farm" for them, or you'd need to truck in 3-500 lb of vegetables and 50 gallons of water per day, per elephant.

Thank god you came along. We didn't know what he was doing.

:tongue01: What it could not have been a serious question with a nice picture... F-off.

Good points... I was thinking more of a free range type thing... tag them, track them and when the time is right, take the ivory. I don't even know if the removal of the tusks hurts the elephant? Could you wait for optimal length and they just cut them off or remove them without harming the Animal? Would it be better to wait for them to grow old and then kill them and take it. I don't know what would work best but there just has to be a better way... There is a lot of money in it and it seems there should be so solution rather than creating a huge black market.
