I am looking to buy an entry-level, long-range, precision, .308 Win rifle to try my hand at 200+ yards shooting. I'll be using this primarily on the range, not hunting. I'm looking at a Winchester 700 SPS Varmint, DPMS LR-308, and Savage 10 FCP. Am I on the right track? Any others I should be considering? Are there any guns on the soon-to-be-banned list I should look at before Oct. 1? Thanks in advance.

I am a few steps ahead of you. I just built a Remington 700, 20" fluted, threaded barrel. 1 in 10 twist. Bell and Carlson Medalist light tactical stock, YHM muzzle brake, bushnell elite tactical mil dot scope. bipod. I love it. I would also recommend that you check out getting an app called Ballistic AE. I put 5 shots into a space a little larger than a dime at 100 yards. Good Luck!

How difficult was the stock upgrade? As simple as unscrewing the original stock and screwing on the new one?

I have been looking myself. Check out the reviews as well as pricing of rhe Ruger M77 scout in 308 and see what you think.

I have the Rem 700 AAC-SD 20 inch heavy barrel 1-10 twist. It's a little more expensive then the SPS, but with a stock upgrade and a decent scope it's a great entry level rifle.

+ 1 for the Remington PSS, check the headspace do a trigger job, put some decent glass on it and you have a entry level tack driver.

I think I'll be starting out in the range of 200-500 yards. I'm not sure I have access to a place to shoot that's longer than that.

You can do that with a less expensive round than .308, for 500 yards or less .223 is sufficient. However, if you really have the distance bug, there is no substitute for .50 BMG or .338 LM, lol.

Actually, none of the above is the hot round for 1,000 yard shooting. However unless you're considering getting into competition, and you're staying under 600 yards, .223 will get it done.

" Long range " , Precision" , and "entry level" are all relative and subjective. But yes , you are on the right track so far as the two most popular choices are the Rem 700 , and the Savage. Each make has a cpl of choices of exact model That are reasonably suitable.
Of course people who are paritisans of ( fill in blank quality rifle ) can and do setup their pet rifles to fulfill the same purposes , but the Rem and Savage are the most popular , with the most choices in near stock form.

Remington 700 or Savage are good places to start. Lots of ways to go from there. And you can spend a LOT. Or spend a lot up front and get a Sako TRG or Accuracy International. :)

Oh, and be prepared to spend at least as much or more than the rifle on the scope.

For most long range stuff, people are shooting bolt action rifles.

.308 out to 1000 yards or so. .300 Win Mag out further. Also, a lot seem to be shooting 6mm or 6.5mm calibers. 6.5 Creedmore, .260 Remington.

GOOD former for long range shooting is Sniper's Hide.

    You probably want an AR10.

Get the Sig 716. Then lets go shooting sometime. :)
