The company truck I drive has a broken speedo and gauges. The boss says its not going to be fixed, it is beat up in other ways also. I have a choise of quitting or drive it on the road. If I quit does that allow me to draw unemployment or just go ahead and retire ( draw SS ) early and find other work? I`m 63 yo. I know its my decision but just looking for input.:)

Yeah, never drew it before. Just kind of wondering since he was wanting me to "break the law" . I would have to document it some way and use that as an unsafe work place or something? Theres more to this but dont want to add that here.

Refuse to drive the truck. When he fires you, you can get unemployment and sue him if you are so inclined.

Years ago I worked for a roofing company who did the same thing to our lead roofing mechanic. He made out fine

Isn't it illegal to drive it w/o a working speedometer?

Contact OSHA and file a complaint. Also contact your boss's insurance company. Clear workplace safety violation.

Do you mean speed camera tickets? Speeding tickets that carry points will only hurt the OP.

just a little sarcasm hence the wink... i wouldn't want to put the op's driving record in jeopardy....the op was questioning unemployment policy that's why i posted the link to answer his first question.

As an employer, I would suggest that you write a letter to your employer saying that the vehicle is unsafe and listthe reasons. Include that you are willing to work hard and are willing to do alternative tasks that do not comprimise your safety.

Your employer will then assign you to a job that does not use the vehicle or fire you.

If the latter happens, then you can collect unemployment. If he assigns you other work, then theorhetically your problem is solved.

That is all assuming that you are actually concerned about the safety concerns of the truck and not looking to quit the job and need some leverage for unemployment.

send them an email saying that the truck is unsafe to drive and that the email is a record of you letting them know. once they are notified and there is a record of it i would think you would have covered your but some and it may get them to fix it. the problem is in this economy they might truely not have the money and may close up or fire you. it sucks out here right now.
