I ordered a casting mold for 45 Long Colt, last week, and it came in yesterday. Upon inspection, I noticed Lee has made some changes to their casting molds - mainly the locating/alignment pins. They have eliminated the V notches on the ends of the mold as well. The alignment pins are now coned shaped, and the other side is a round steel insert to line up the hold halves.

I broke in my mold this morning, and found the new design to be better! I cranked out a few hundred 255 grain RF for 45LC. The instructions on the new mold was dated, 2012, where as my other molds are older dates.

I put a few pics below to show the difference. You'll notice on the bottom pic, the alignment pins are horizantal, which works fine too, but the new design aligns better IMHO. The top pic is the new design, and the middle pic the other side where the cone pins align into.

I'm just getting started in casting and if I have I might bug you if that's ok. I've been able to accumulate some wheel weights as well as about 320 lbs of soft lead that someone was using as tractor weights. I need to do a smelt day soon to get everything into ingot form so that I'm ready to cast.

I have been making bullets for almost 50 years. Since Lee molds have improved so much, I hardly use my two cavity Saeco, RCBS and Lyman molds. I have bought six cavity molds for all my pistols and don't even bother to size them anymore. I just lube with ALOX (from White labs) and load. My SAECO lubrisizer now sits around gathering dust. ;)

I just received a lee 6 cavity 9mm mold (.356) and am itching to try it out.

I like the cam operated sprue plate, thinking about ordering a six cavity for .45 as well.

I use the 200 gn round nose, flat point .45 mold. It feeds fine from all my guns, 1911, Taurus 24/7, M&P 45. I lube it with ALOX even though it is not a tumble lube type bullet and it works fine. I find the tumble lube bullets are too hard to fill out properly using range scrap which is what I mold with.

I have a 2 cavity .45 lee mood that works great, but I like the cam sprue plate on the six cavity a lot.

I have used Lee molds for years.Never had any problems with them. One good load for a 45ACP is 200 grain home cast swc and 4.0 bullseye.

Looks like an improvement over the older design. At today's prices maybe I should start selling my older molds and replace them for a lot less when the craziness subsides. :innocent0

Considering my arthritis limits my shooting these days, I have been selling my expensive molds and just use the six cavity Lee molds these days. I figure I will wear out before they do. :innocent0
