This is another confusing inconsisency in the bill!

Several of us have discussed this in person, and there is no consensus on the limit for handguns... some read limit, others not...
Let's hope you're right, but 4-305 (page 10) says differently. It does not differentiate between rifle and handgun. It simply says "magazines

I'm still unclear on the rim fire pistol thing. I have a Ruger 22/45 with a threaded barrel. I understand that is now considered an "assault pistol". But, will it be grandfathered in, or is it outright banned and I'll have to get rid of it? I guess that also means my suppressor would have to go, huh?

Also, last year my son bought himself a Mini-30 for his 18th birthday. Would he have to sell that or is he grandfathered in, since the paperwork is in his name.

I don't believe the suppressor is directly banned, there just wouldn't be any guns you could legally mount it on. You could still possess it legally, it's just an expensive paperweight.

Couldn't it be mounted on the grandfathered rifles with threaded barrels?

I wonder how this will affect current purchases, I am waiting for my papers to be finished hopefully any day now for a Glock G17 Gen 4. I looked at the flowchart but I am not sure if it's "named an assault pistol"

If so, I wonder how soon this could go in to action and what would happen to pending registrations etc. Oy what a mess!!

I really hate to be this way, as this stance usually rubs me the wrong way, and strikes me as being a bit 'holier than thou', but these posts keep coming up over and over again to the point where I really just have to say:

Why do you care whether or not this law affects this gun or that gun in your personal collection or that you'd like to buy someday?? You should be caring about what can be done to STOP this bill, not what the ramifications are to your own personal needs and desires!!

Seriously, all this defeatist whining is really getting to me. Get your pathetic ass down to Annapolis on Wednesday and DO something about it. I know I don't speak for myself when I say I know exactly what I would do when it comes to gun bans and God forbid confiscations, and I REALLY don't want it to come to that. I'm not one for political action at this point for the most part, but I think it's rather incumbent for individuals who will passionately defend certain rights and ideals to not put some effort into less messy methods before it gets to that point. Put up or shut up. Nobody cares about your threaded Buckmark or M&P 22 - we care about defeating this bill.

Do we have a count on how many people plan to testify on Wednesday? I'll be there, just not sure if I will testify or not.

    Show up Wednesday.
    Attend the rally.
Testify even if you just say "I oppose...."

Be a part of the effort to stop this legislation.

    Please.

    Very well said Ethan83.

Anyone who thinks Maryland isn't looking to take away every privately owned gun in the state is kidding themselves.

Actually you are being "holier than thou". It just so happens I WILL be at Annapolis on Wednesday and I WILL be testifying. I need answers to questions about my specific guns because I am working on my testimony that comes from the standpoint of a family man and I need relevant arguments that can't be simply stricken down by "you misunderstand the bill, it won't have any affect on your issue". So, don't be so quick to assume the questions are being asked for selfish reasons. Just make sure YOUR ass is there. Mine will be.

I'll answer you as best I can, but Ethan is right, in the bigger picture... we are getting way too many "but what about my..." questions, for short-sighted reasons.

There would be no "assault pistol" under this bill... everything that becomes restricted gets lumped under "assault weapon"

Your 22/45 would, then, be considered the same as, say, an AR (or a pistol-grip semi-auto turkey gun). It would need to be registered, or face a fine and a disqualifying jail-time charge.

Off the top of my head, I can't answer specifically to the Mini-30 (I don't even recall seeing it on "the list"), but assuming it doesn't meet any of the "tests" for features, nothing is needed. If a test is met, then as he is under 21, I believe it becomes not just restricted but illegal. He would need to sell it prior to Oct 1, IMO.

But again, as this bill is often ridiculous and self-contradictory.

I understand it's the bigger picture thing, but we need to come across as regular people. They know full well what they are doing is a direct assault to the 2nd Amendment and there are plenty of people who will testify to that point. We need people to testify how it will impact them directly, and others like them, as well. There needs to be that personal connection in some of the testimony or it will come off as a bunch of scripted talking points that will make their eyes glass over. They already know the "pro-gun crowd" will vote against them next election. They need to see people they feel may be on the fence about their re-election prospects.

I don't see how asking about how this bill affects you is "short-sighted". If we want people to fight, we need to tell them what they're going to lose.

Not quite true. There are three classes of banned "assault weapon" in this bill:
    1. Assault pistols (same as what we have now)
    2. Assault long guns (all currently-regulated shotguns and rifles)
    3. Copycat weapons (guns that are not banned by name, but fail the feature test).

They are treated mostly the same.

Off the top of my head, I can't answer specifically to the Mini-30 (I don't even recall seeing it on "the list"), but assuming it doesn't meet any of the "tests" for features, nothing is needed. Mini-30s are not a named rifle/shotgun or a copy, so as long as it passes the feature test, it's fine.

    Exactly.

Thanks. Actually, his has a flash hider and 20 round mags, so it would fail the feature test. My question was regarding the fact that he would have to dispose of a product he legally purchased under state law at the time.

Speaking more generally! Nearly all the questions HAVE been specific to one weapon, if not assuming the bill was already law. So yeah--I'd call those short-sighted.

Not quite true. There are three classes of banned "assault weapon" in this bill:
    1. Assault pistols (same as what we have now)'Pistol' is removed text throughout the bill, replaced with 'weapon'... but again it's not particularly consistent
    2. Assault long guns (all currently-regulated shotguns and rifles)
    3. Copycat weapons (guns that are not banned by name, but fail the feature test).

They are treated mostly the same.

Mini-30s are not a named rifle/shotgun or a copy, so as long as it passes the feature test, it's fine.

    See above...

But again, this bill is so inconsistent as to be ludicrous, and I cannot see how it passes Constitutional muster.

Get off your high horse, man. Stop whining about those who want to understand the bill further. You're no better than those trying to suppress our rights because you're trying to suppress individuals' understanding of this legislation. I've sent in letters, called, and will be in Annapolis, but according to you, I shouldn't be trying to further my knowledge on the specifics of the bill. What's a more convincing argument to a fence-sitter: "Don't take my guns because it's a 2A right!" (which could be changed) or "Don't establish X and Y and Z because of A and B and C"? Sometimes you have to ask questions to fully understand the latter arguments, and those questions may be along the lines of "would such and such gun be banned for such and such reason."

It seems like every bill that is proposed has a "fee" associated with it. How is Maryland propose to collect a $100.00 fee from illegal gun owners. If this bill passes they won't get my $100.00. I am retired. I can and will move from Maryland and relocate to a state where common sense reins.
