Hey everybody, a few weeks ago I went to a gun store, run rack ltd I believe, and was looking at a bunch of guns I was interested in. PTR 91s, FALs, ARs, and AKs. All sorts of goodies. I had over $2,000 I was planning on spending. I start looking at this mossberg 500 and I ask the guy how much. He tells me and says "you're 21, right?" I look up and tell him I'm 20. "Sorry but that gun has a pistol grip, so it's considered a pistol". I stared at him for a bit, not knowing what to say. I spend the next couple minutes asking about guns that don't have pistol grips (VEPRs, m1as, mossin nagants, etc.). I walk out with just a brick of 22lr and head to Constitutional Firearms (really nice people). The man told me the same thing, but I wasn't about to walk out empty handed again, except he told me "I can't find it anywhere" and described it as "strong arm tactics" by the ATF. I bought a chinese SKS and I'm happy I did, but I had never heard of this law and my year was blown because I don't want to have to wait 'til next November to by a gun I want. I also asked about this on youtube and family friends, and they told me that they had never heard of it. Sorry if this isn't where this question belongs, but I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Buy shotgun with stock. Buy $20 pistol grip. Use screwdriver to mate the two. That or wait until you're 21.

And for an AR or the AK-74 I had my eye on? Or perhaps some other rifle?

Oh come on really? You can't wait until you're 21 for a regulated rifle? Really? Why not invest the money for the year and make a profit instead of letting it burn a hole in your pocket? I had a lot of things to worry about when I was 20, not being able to buy a type of gun wasn't one of them though.

Maryland treats all handguns, and some scary-looking longguns as "Regulated".

Must be 21 to possess. Extra paperwork, $10 fee, background checks, and 7 to 10 to 28 day wait (depending on how slow the process goes...).

All ARs are "regulated" except "Colt HBARs and copies of the Colt HBAR". (HBARs were considered "target rifles", not "assault rifles") What that means is up to the individual dealer. Many will sell any HBAR as cash and carry, but not all will.

The list is kind of quirky. It was drawn up back in the late '80s, I think, and it shows. For instance the "Bushmaster rifle" was a prototype that was never produced in quantity- it's not related to the AR. Many other guns on the list are long-forgotten relics of the '80s.

Note the CZ58 is not regulated. Many consider it better than the AK.
Mini 14 is not regulated, unless it comes with a folding stock.

Buy an HBAR. Many dealers sell HBAR 16" carbines as cash-and-carry. You kind of picked a bad time, though... Still, it's the only way you can legally buy an AR before you're 21. You can swap uppers after you turn 21 if you want, or stick with the HBAR- nothing wrong with it- some like it, some don't. Some like pencil barrels, some don't.

Well as one poster suggested buying the shotgun and screwing the pistol grip on. It's illegal and in violation of federal law. But that doesn't matter pistol gripped shotguns suck. Unless you're breaching doors or firing from a moving vehicle the. Then they serve a purpose. So stick with a regular stock. There's plenty of other unregulated guns available though. For example HBAR ARs or Vz. 58s are unregulated and make great purchases. There's also most shotguns and old military rifles commonly known as C&R or get a .308 bolt gun. I'm 20 so I'm in the same boat as you.

There's no law against putting a pistol grip on a shotgun.

Yea, I got a pamphlet titled "Gun Violence Act of 1996 Information Bulletin".
@mark ...I don't really think that it's that ridiculous that I pay for my college semester and my car AND at the same time save for a over year so that I can get into a hobby that I've been interested in since I was a little kid. Perhaps I am not spending my money as frivolously as you assume I am.

IMHO frivoloties like AK's and AR's are more of luxury toys that you can afford once you've done everything else to set yourself up in life. Worrying about them at 20 seems trivial. At 20 I learned how to survive on nothing and learned the value of a dollar. By 25 I had converted that to a point where cost wasn't an issue for toys, but that never would have happened if not for the struggles before. Kind of why I don't believe in parents supporting young adults financially at all.

Buy a non regulated firearm. Don't posses a regulated firearm in MD if you're under 21.
