I've been doing some research and I'd love to buy/build a new rifle for hunting and target. I have .22s and 5.56 AR and a few 30-30 lever actions and a mosin and a bolt 30-30. But I want to buy a good medium-long range rifle based off the new tactical trend, but I suffer with caliber? I'd like to find a good jack of all trade caliber in a tactical style bolt action rifle for $1000 or less. I'm thinking somewhere in the savage model 10-12, Remington 700, or the like, but I'm struggling with what caliber to be looking for. Here's my criteria, I'd love a jack of all trades caliber capable of taking wild boar to larger game such as elk or bear if I decided to. I don't want to under buy on a caliber and I don't want to overbuy either. I know there are a lot of give and take but I keep thinking that a typical .308 would prObably suit my needs, but what about 6.5 creedmore or 300 win mag, or even 30-06. In most cases it would be for local deer but I have family that live in tn as well as wv and Louisiana so I'd love a good accurate "jack of all trades" caliber for those times. It also wouldn't hurt to have a caliber where they sell factory threaded barrels as well because I've been interested in suppressors lately, although I'd give up that capability for a superior round. There's just so many calibers to pick from!

You good sir have just started a pissing match.

I would tend to say a Remington 700 in .308 would serve you well.

Not familiar with the hunting laws, but if you can use a semi-auto, an M1A would be an option too.

ah hem...i mean...30-06. It's been around a while and has proven itself time and time again. You can find it loaded with 110 gr all the way up to 220 gr at basically any gun store. If you're roaming the countryside somewhere out in montana, you should have no problem finding 30-06. There's plenty of good target factory ammo, although handloading would give you the best results. It's capable of being loaded slightly hotter than .308 for extra long distance.

if you're going for .308...please do me a favor and get a FNAR..then post lots of pics. I have a hard-on for that rifle. It's a semi-auto, .308 chambered rifle that takes a 20 round box mag and will shoot .5 MOA out of the box. Can't beat that for around $1,100-1,500

Of course they were using 8mm mauser.....now 30-06 military ball compared to 8mm mauser ball military...that's essentially identical right there. The big advantage was the semi-auto garand that set the USA apart.

True, but the Germans in WWI learned the hard way in Belleau Woods (sp?) that the '06 wasn't to be taken lightly, Marines had backed them up quite a ways and were still dropping jerry's long after jerry thought he was out of range.

The rounds just got history, and I respect the hell out of it.

    Another vote for the '06.
Smokey- ever watch the YouTube video on how to break down a FNAR? It will cure all want of owning one. Easily the dumbest take down of any firearm you'll ever witness. I'm on my phone and can't link, but search "FNAR bolt removal in High Definition" (will be a 7minute vid of a guy in a camo shirt). If you're still game after watching that train wreck- then have at it :D

It would have to be a .308 or 30-06. Both are available anywhere and can be hand loaded for all purposes from varmint to big game.

it's not that bad. Remember, i've got that BAR above. The FNAR is pretty similar. The FNAR has a couple more steps than mine to get the action bars, rod and spring out...but on mine, that little lever on the side he's talking about is peened on the end and binds the bolt travel within it's carrier(i need to get that fixed)...so manipulating the bolt to get it out takes incredible hulk fingers.
