There always seems to be a thread about squirrels, groundhogs and other assorted varmints around this time of year. I have not found it, so I am starting one.

Who is your nemesis this year, what have they done, and how are you taking care of it!

For me, once again, it is battle with the squirrels. They have been brutalizing the bird feeders, and yesterday they got into my back porch where they found some packets of corn I had intended on planting. they made quite a mess. So far I have eliminated seven of them bastiges. For the ones taken at the bird feeder, 50 yards from my bench rest position on the 2nd floor, I use my RWS 34 .22cal pellet rifle with the polymer tipped pellets. For the ones taken from the 2nd floor dormer near the back porch (5-15 yards) I use my Remmington 12C with super colibri ammo. This is quieter than the RWS, but lacks any kind of accuracy beyond 20 yards.

The squirrels continue their onslaught, sometimes even stepping over their fallen comrades. There seems to be no shortage of them.

This years its both the whistle pigs and raccoons. I've got 17 raccoons so far that were making a mess in our barn I normally use a .22 or 12 gauge. Groundhogs are making a lot of holes and the horses could brake their leg from them. I just got one with a 12 gauge from about 10 yards it did pretty well...

Anyone have some ideas for getting rid of moles. My yard is lousey with them.
I have some starlings nesting in my facia boards. I'm trying to get them with the pellet gun.

I was over run with moles a few years ago. I used a piece of 2" flexible metal electric tube to pipe exhaust from my old van into their tunnels one evening. 1/2 hour of carbon monoxide and they have been gone for several years!

yeahhh, was asleep and this guy flew in and landed on me to wake me up. Apparently my screen fell out sometime over the night from the wind.

Well.. four more tree rats gone this weekend!
As far as moles I don't know. I have a vole (sp?) problem. Haven't done anything about it yet, but I did notice a large black snake in the yard so that should help.

It had not occurred to me to get after the sparrows and starlings yet.

To get rid of the moles, get rid of the grubs eating the roots of your sunny lawn.
It takes awhile, but it's now time to put down the insecticide. (I forget the name, call Roozen's in Silver Spring).

Does the heat make squirrels go dormant or something? I have not seen ANY since Friday. I am pretty sure I have not wiped out the population yet. Weird. I have been seeing more bunnies though. Wont shoot them until I catch em red handed in the veg garden.

They will chill in the middle of the day.

Wait till bunny season opens in the fall, then you can eat them cottontails.

For all intents and purposes legal, you need a landowner nuisance permit to get rid of squirrels, barn coons, and the like out of season ( I don't want anyone getting in trouble with the DNR guys and gals- some of the officers probably come here now and then looking for stuff like this). Not sure why you have birdfeeders out this time of year either, plenty for the birds to eat now. I'd rather they eat annoying insects than spend money on seeds. Unless you have rare birds like indigo buntings and scarlet tanagers, or you have hummingbird feeders ( though planting certain flowering plants like trumpet vine also attracts them).

Right now I have no varmint problems. Even the mice have been thinned down for now. I haven't seen a deer in a week or so. My dad saw what looked like a small groundhog hightailing it out of the veggie garden, but he hasn't said anything since.

I have a problem on my farm with groundhogs. There is probably 10 holes on my property...I have only seen one groundhog. Is there anything I can do to get them out of the hole to shoot them? With groundhog holes, is there usually another way out or is it just a cave?

Groundhogs borrow is actually a very complex setup- its not just a hole in the ground. They make different "chambers" underground - including what some would consider a bathroom - defecation chamber.

This time of year groundhogs are not active (hibernating)-depending on where you live. Occasionally if there is a warm spell, groundhogs will come out of there burrow. Here in Garrett Co, we wont see them until Spring.

A trick Ive used -when you hunt them is to use a high pitch whistle. The one I use looks like a dog whistle -but is not silent (or high pitched outside of the human hearing threshold). If you spot them in the field, and they duck into there hole, I usally set up my bipod on my rifle from afar (few hundred yards). When you toot on the whistle -they stand up out of curiosity - and you sock em in the head with a bullet.
