So, as some of you may know, I have a Smith and Wesson 64-3. Late last night, during one of my sleep-deprived gun thoughts, it occurred to me I should get a S&W revolver in .357 to match. Specifically, a 6 inch one to go with my 4 inch 64.

Now, I'm not particularly well versed on the advantages of the 66 vs. the 686, nor do I have any idea about the differences between the different dashes.

I won't be buying this for another few months, but is there anything that I should be on the look out for? As much as I like the older Smiths, a 7-shot 686+ would be pretty cool.

Any particular models or variations that I should focus on? I'm not much of a collector, and I shoot everything that I own fairly regularly.

    Gratuitous 64 photo below.

I would stick with a L frame if planing a steady diet of 357 mag, K frames Have forcing cone cracking issues with a steady diet of 357 mag..

My first pistol was a S&W 627-2 in .357, stainless, unfluted 6" barrel, target sights and a Dan Wesson Performance Center product. It weighs 54 oz empty and it is a beautiful piece.

My last pistol purchase came in 2009 and it's a Colt King Cobra in .357. It, too, is stainless and a 4 inch. It's very nice and packs a punch. It's a good companion while roaming between the snakepits, DC and Baltimore.

Now that is a fine weapon. I dig the A/M cylinder release, very easy to manipulate.

As for 686? I love mine but on my short list is a 627. Either one is nice, especially the earlier 686, but the later ones aren't bad either. Some folks scoff at the internal locking system, I haven't had a problem with mine. Shoots like a champ, zero problems to date. Here is some food for thought...

Regardless, any S&W .357 will serve you well. A 4" 686+ would make an ideal combat weapon if that is what you're looking for.

I'm VERY envious of your 627! Pics, please?

I'm curious. What makes you say this?

Fair enough. Passed down to me were my Fathers Model 60 and my Grandfathers Model 10. Yes, I know, the 10 was a .38 only, but it was the genesis of the later .357. The Model 60 was, however, a .357. That gun DID get shots off in anger. He carried it as his back up piece in Vietnam flying for the USN. I'm not sure how or why, but this gun did get used. How so I am not privy to. My Grandfather carried his Model 10 while stationed in the Philippines with the USN, though I do not believe his ever got a shot off in anger. And if I'm not mistaken, my brother flew with his 586 4" as a back up during OIF with the USMC. I'll have to confirm this, though.

Your point? And I don't mean that to be crappy, either. Mine was that S&W has proven itself to be combat worthy, thats all.

If they could make a 17 shot revlover that wasn't heavy as hell, Id gladly carry it at work. I do love me some revolvers and jawn I think your head is in the right place. They ALWAYS go bang unless you have a bad primer. I'm not well versed on the differences so I just subscribed to this thread but damn do I love me some revolvers. They make GREAT bug's.

I own 3 model 10's (only one gets shot)
I ruger vaquero in .44 (always goes to the range with me)
One Colt snubbie (doesn't get shot)
And one savage 10 shot .22 (gets a work out.)

I do love me some wheel guns and have been thinking about a .357 as well. I'm also eyeing that LCR in the classifieds.......damn MDS classifieds.

Dude. My .357 LCR is my favorite gun to shoot. There's something immensely satisfying about full-house .357 loads in a 17 ounce revolver.

I never actually meet anyone in Seal Team 6, but apparently they used to use 4inch 686s... Does that count?

EDIT: Maybe it was 66s.. or both.
