Well after visiting canuck down at the AAFG range I am starting to do some research on IDPA. It looks like a lot of fun. I have a few pistols and I am trying to decide which one I should use. I really, really like my Sig P225 but the capacity is only 8 rounds and I only have 2 mags. I like my P30 and my USP 40 as well. Those are the three I am considering. I also have a Glock 21 SF, Sig P220 and a Glock 26 is on the way.

Another thing I am concerned about is my lack of training/skill. I go to Hap Baker a lot where they will not permit rapid fire, AT ALL. I am not that great of a pistol shooter anyway, average at best (I don't have a lot of time to practice going to school full time and working full time). Anything I can do to train/practice without being able to rapid fire? What other skills are useful (drawing out of a holster, fast reloading, etc.)?

We will work with you as we do all new shooters. All of us were new at one point. :D Check out my website for more info.

I am planning on a new shooter session sometime soon. I will keep folks here advised. This will be an opportunity to get comfortable with drawing and firing. I can recommend that you get yourself a holster and practice drawing and dry firing 15 - 20 minutes a day. This will at least get you comfortable with that motion. You can also practice reloading with empty magazines.

I would recommend a 9mm pistol for cost and recoil control. Your 225 will be fine as all /most of our stages are 12 rounds which requires a reload for everyone. Buy a few more mags. The only issue with the sig is the long double action pull but you can get used to that plus there are some things that we can do to lighten the pull reliably as long as you will not be using this pistol for self defense.

    PS - 220 is done.

Nothing wrong with 7 round mags. I'm going to be using 7 rounders in the future for CDP, since my Tripp Cobra mags came in.

EDIT: A couple of the needed skills people seem to skip or ignore is shooting from around a baricade, and quickly clearing malfunctions. Too many legs sticking out, and people get brain freeze when the gun doesn't go bang.

Kydex holsters work well for me.

There are a few specific rules to follow, but not very hard to comply with.

The IDPA rule book (http://www.idpa.com/) has lots of examples.

You could also see what other people are using at match as well to get ideas.

    Holsters for IDPA

If you buy a good set up you are looking at about $125 at the high end and maybe half that for injection molded. You will also need a sturdy gunbelt. 1.5" double thick cowhide seems to work best. they can be about $75, but you can wear it everyday, I do. a good source is

    I prefer Kydex.

    3 good sources are

Blackhawk (the serpa, lock not required)

Bladetech - you want a belt holster (vertical cant) i have like 12 of these for my guns

This is a good one. It's more custom than the injection molded so its more expensive. These are thick kydex and fit the gun well, very smooth.

thanks Dave, I will definitely need some training! I looked at the sight and ready everything, I would like to probably go to that August shoot because like I told you I can't make the July 26th shoot. I'll have to order a holster and everything as well...

How'd the 220 turn out? I can't wait to shoot that thing!
