  • Trying to pick a rear sight. At first I was going to pick a carry handle, but I changed my mind because I may want to mount an optic. Three have caught my attention: (1) Magpul MBUS Gen 2, (2) Yankee Hill Machine Flip-Up and (3) Daniel Defense A1.5 Fixed. I really like the looks of the DD, but I'm a little leery of whether I could adapt to using a fixed back-up with an optic. Any recommendations/advice?

Depends on the optic. If you are going with anything magnified you should use a rear BUIS that folds - Matec, MBUS, YHM, Troy.
If the optic is non-magnified I would suggest non-folding - DD 1.5, Troy fixed, or one of the chopped A2 handles. Using fixed sights in combination with a red dot is pretty easy to get used to. Having your irons up and ready to go when you forget to turn your power on or your batteries died might come in handy.

You can use the fixed rear with a scope like the Elcan or ACOG by mounting it in front. I've played with the idea and seen pics of Canadians with C7s set up that way. I'm not real warm and fuzzy on that though. Fuzzy being a key word there.

Like Spatha said. If you're using a non magnified optic such as a red dot then a fixed sight is perfect with a lower 1/3rd witness. I used a rear flip sight until a friend turned me on to a Daniel Defense fixed sight. I like it much better. It doesn't get in the way if you go lower 1/3rd and all it takes is a quick adjustment in cheek weld to engage the irons.

By the way, stay away from the YHM rear flip sight unless you are using a YHM front sight. The one I had seemed like good quality but it sat a little lower than the F marked A2 front sight.
