The better question is why didn't he already have a gun since his country is surrounded by other countries that want to wipe him and his off the planet.

Matti appears to have been happy poo-pooing gun ownership as backward and unintelligent until a few of his friends were massacred.

He will forget and revert to his Old Ways.

Great article. A different perspective. Thanks for posting.

The author has some interesting perspective.

Part of the dynamic around weapons here is one where the middle and upper classes outsource violence to people further down the economic food chain, and then look down on them for it. A more extreme version of this exists in America, where better-off citizens can express disgust with the military or call to “defund the police,” enjoying the perks of a powerful country and safe neighborhoods while pretending their own hands are clean.

Let's see how long this memory lasts.

    After mentioning the hoops and background checks he negotiates to get his license, he says;

"... you’re licensed to own and carry a single weapon with a serial number registered with the government under your name. You cannot buy another gun. You’re allowed to buy 100 bullets that must be accounted for each time you renew your license. It’s virtually impossible to buy a rifle."

Then he mentions the bad shooting and incompetence of the gun owners he sees at the range, and warns his children to lie down flat if a shooting breaks out, because the incompetent civilians, firing wildly, will be a greater danger than the terrorists.

Maybe that follows from the civilians being restricted to possessing only 100 rounds.

It would make much more sense to REQUIRE gun owners to fire at least 100 rounds every month.

I agree. I'd had a working knowledge of Israel's stance on personal firearms ownership, but the author stated it quite clearly.

Very different than the images of Israeli teachers with "assault rifles" slung over their shoulders while escorting students on field trips.

This could have gone in the "Israel in Turmoil" thread but I thought since it discusses issues relevant to our rights as well I'd post a separate thread on it. It's from an Israeli writer discussing why he got a gun.

    Why I got a gun
Great read. Growing up with lots of extermination camp survivors, I can never understand Jews who espouse gun control.

To them, a hoe is more valuable than a gun- both are tools though.

Not to over simplify it, but they are children of God and just want to be left alone in peace. Unfortunately, peace often comes at a cost.

“When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons. Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.”

    Nice article.

Here’s a sentence from a similar article, about guns in the US, my grandkids’ kids will likely read …

For the average Israeli American, guns are simply a tool for protection against the Arab violence that has shaped is shaping this society over the last this century.”

Because Israel is Legally , politically , and Socially anti gun .

And because of this, they're paying the blood price for their idealism.

Idealism is far from ideal, when zealots from the edges of the political spectrum stand on principle, in order that they might be slaughtered in a state of Grace.

    We have them here, too.

Yet Evil is still evil, and is pleased to do evil to those who make it even easier.
