Can one convert or build an AR platform rifle that is chambered for .280? If not, is there an alternative rifle other than the Remington Woodsman (i.e. read is there an alternative "assault rifle") that is chambered for .280? Perhaps there is someone who will custom build a .280 AR?:innocent0

If you're wondering WHY I am asking, it is because I happen to like the .280 round even though it is not that popular. Perhaps a semi-auto EBR/carbine chambered for 6.8mm (a.k.a. .270 - correct me if I am wrong but I think this is the equivalent round) is the answer; but I've heard not so great things about the 6.8mm round.

the bigger ones are naughty, but with moderate long range ballistics at best.

280 rem is a necked down 30-06 with a 7mm bullet, and is too big for an AR-15 or AR-10 action.

The 6.8SPC uses a relatively light 270 cal bullet of around 115gr at 2600fps, but is about the same length as .223, and will fit in a AR-15 action, it was designed to hit harder than 5.56, and have better ballistics, and is quickly gaining a reputation as a good whitetail round.

Outside of semi auto "hunting" rifles, about the closest you can get to 280rem is a 7mm-08 barreled AR-10, although you can get a barrel for most any 308 length caliber, 300SAUM, 260rem, 22-250, 243win, etc

I was looking at Sabre Defence and they have an AR platform rifle chambered for 6.5 grendel. Seems like an interesting but a bit uncommon. Something to consider but keep giving me suggestions, I'm listening.

6.5 is a better round than 6.8 IMO. I looked at the 6.8 round bc like you said, its almost a .270. But when I compared the ballistics between the 6.8 and a .270, they were completely different. 6.8 is slower and has much less energy than a .270.

Ive always wanted to chamber an AR in a round that had similar ballistics to a .270. Unfortuantly you get either energy or accuracy. Sure the 50 beuwolf has a lot of energy at 100 yards, but is dropping like a soft ball.

The 6.5 grendel seems to be a very fast and flat round, but it just doesnt have the muzzle energy or energy at 100 yards that id like to have.

From the muzzle the 6.5 with a 123 grain bullet has 2065 foot pounds of energy going 2750 fps, at 100 yards it has 1829 foot pounds of energy going 2588 fps, and at 200 yards it has 1615 foot pounds of energy going 2432 fps with a 2.7" drop if zeroed at 100 yards. Thats a little more energy and less velocity than a .243 shooting 95 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertips.

From the muzzle a 6.8 with a 115 grain bullet has 2002 foot pounds of energy going 2800 fps, at 100 yards it has 1647 foot pounds of energy going 2540 fps, and at 200 yards it has 1343 foot pounds of energy going 2293 fps with 2.91'' drop if zeroed at 100 yards. Thats even slower and has less energy than the same .243 round mentioned above.

The .280 round that you are looking at from the muzzle shoots over 3000 fps and has around 2800 foot pounds of energy. At 100 yards your looking at around 2800 fps and 2500 foot pounds of energy. At 200 yards the round is traveling about 2650 fps with 2200 foot pounds of energy and a drop of about 2.8" if zeroed at 100 yards.

The way I see it is we can't get what we want, looks like we will have to settle for less or buy something in the AR 10 platform.

    Hope this helps

There are barrels available for the FAL in .243 and .260 calibers. I could have sworn that someone had 7-08 barrels at one time. Would any of those calibers work for you?

7-08 might but what I hand in mind, ideally, is an EBR in 30-06 but I got to thinking about it and thought, "you know, I like the .280 cartridge. it has the power of a 30-06 but a smaller bullet meaning higher velocity." Kinda thought of it as a super-powered 25-06 in its own sorta way. Maybe I need to move away from the AR-15 platform and look to AR-10. They have plenty of those in .308 which I suppose is similar to a 30-06.
