If they really had confidence in their product, they wouldn't have used that silly string. Just sayin'...

Damn, they printed the barrel too. That's really impressive.
The 3D Printed metal gun proves that 3D Printing isn’t just making trinkets and Yoda heads.

No kidding. They didn't mention machine time to fab the parts. I'm guessing "many hours."

I just saw this elsewhere (some twitter feed I follow, I think) and thought a few things:

1 - awesome! steel and alloy 3D printing!
    2 - beautiful, they made a 1911
3 - wow, they freakin' printed out metal

    oh and
    4 - this is amazing

Did I repeat myself there? I think I did. So if ten years ago you could only find 3-D printers at places like, oh, the Virginia Tech architecture school or UMCP's Engineering department, but now you can set yourself up to print (in plastics) for under $2000, how fast is the technology changing?

    Wow.

Interesting times we live in. Interesting times!

This isn't a new process, it is just an expensive one due to patents on the process. There are actually 3 different 3d printing techniques. What is neat about laser sintering is that it can print with metals. The patent also expires in 2014 so expect the price for this technique to drop.

Even a drastic drop is still going keep the cost of the technique well beyond the average hobbyist's budget. It won't be like churning out a 80% AR lower with a Harbor Freight drill press.

Group buy? Could take a few years to pull together but that's what dreams are for.:)

There is NOTHING less scary. Not terrorists, aliens, zombies, in laws, boogey men, big foots, angry uncaged chimpanzees, nuclear war, gamma bursts, pole reversal, solar flare burst, tsunami, flesh eating bacteria, erectile dysfunction, making love to your girlfriend for the first time to find out the next day she's your long lost sister, Freddy Kruger, mega quakes, Chinese invasion, caldera collapse, asteroid collision with Earth, transvestite super model chicks, rust on a classic car, plagues, famine, forest fires, or Gremlins. I'm sure I forgot one or two.
